Chicago Teachers Strike

When does the first bus from Madison leave?

Come on all you public employee union fans, time to turn words into actions.

Or, will there be lots of equivocating? After all, Obama's hometown, his former chief of staff. Interesting...

I thought democrats just rolled over in union negotiations since they pretty much fund them 100% right? That's why we needed to repeal their "bargaining" rights after all.

Doesn't matter what it is, what it isn't is Chicago, making clear that the OP is a liar and agitator, a partisan hack with no real interest in the well-being of the children of Chicago or the teachers instructing them.

No it isn't making clear that the OP is a liar and agitator. The Obamas have a home in the town of Chicago. That is no lie.

He lived/lives there, and represented it in Congress. I would think that counts.

At any rate, I think the point is, if this were a Republican run city/ state, there would be howls upon howls.

Instead, Rahm gets a speaking slot at the DNC, and as I predicted, there's been a whole lot of equivocating.

It's almost like Democrats love for unions is political, not principled. Who'd have thunk?

So they gave him a speaking slot knowing, that after the convention was over, that the teachers would strike?

Heh. Not sure about that. But he hadn't exactly endeared himself to public employee unions before this. Changing work rules, implementing a longer school day, etc. And national Dems? Not a peep. Kind of like how Obama became oh so busy once WI recall started looking bad.

For instance:
http://news.investors.com/ibd-editorial ... htm?p=full

With a budget shortfall of about $30 million that could balloon to nearly $700 million next year, Emanuel has threatened to lay off 625 city union employees unless what he considers unfairly restrictive and costly work rules are revised.

"Before the day starts, somebody should not get time-and-a-half. They get regular time. Your day hasn't even started," Emanuel said. "I also believe, when it comes to overtime, you should get time-and-a-half, not double-time. These are simple reforms."

The clout-heavy International Union of Operating Engineers gets that contractually mandated double-time for its members' overtime work.

A perk that hoisting engineers call "grease time" is a half-hour of overtime pay in each shift for maintaining the heavy equipment union members operate. Emanuel wants to curb this paycheck padding.

How many city workers does it take to change a light bulb? In Chicago, union work rules require three: one to drive the truck, one to actually change the bulb and one to just sit down and do nothing. As CBS2Chicago pointed out in a recent report, the driver, who makes $70,408 a year, only drives to the location. When someone is in the lift-bucket, a second person is required on the ground for safety. They both make $84,968 a year.

Okay, but that article is from a right-wing perspective, you say.

Try this one on for size:

At least now anyone who had been paying attention knows that when the word "reform" comes out of the mouth of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, it means union busting and the bashing of public workers — and that Chicago's teachers are not alone in the face of an agenda that makes Chicago's mayor roughly the same as Wisconsin's governor when it comes to aggressive attacks on the rights of public workers.

Damn. To save the unions, we must elect a Republican. It couldn't be more clear.

Didn't take long for this to become Obama's fault.
