Ann Althouse: Romney video no big deal

Postby Stu Levitan » Mon Sep 17, 2012 10:29 pm

Altmouse on the Romney "47%" video : "I don't see anything bad in there at all."

Idiot or propagandist? Either way, she's an embarrassment to the UW Law School.

Question to my fellow forons,

Would it be considered bad form to take cheap shots at both Stu Levitan AND Althouse/Meade? I don't really think I can choose.

Congrats Stu you've reached a new low.

No one watches your tv show or listens to your radio show so you gotta come in here and spout stupid shit?

Time for you to retire old man. You are an embarrassment to Terese Berceau.

A2 holds herself out as someone whose insights are so interesting and perceptive that she has her own damn blog -- and it's a "new low" to comment on her commentary? I seriously don't get that.

Here's the AP -- the AP! -- hard news lede:

Already scrambling to steady a struggling campaign, Republican Mitt Romney confronted a new headache Monday after a video surfaced showing him telling wealthy donors that almost half of all Americans "believe they are victims" entitled to extensive government support. He added that as a candidate for the White House, "my job is not to worry about those people."

Here's Bloomberg -- Bloomberg!:

You can mark my prediction now: A secret recording from a closed-door Mitt Romney fundraiser, released today by David Corn at Mother Jones, has killed Mitt Romney's campaign for president. [...]
Romney already has trouble relating to the public and convincing people he cares about them. Now, he's been caught on video saying that nearly half the country consists of hopeless losers.

Romney has been vigorously denying President Obama's claims that his tax plan would raise taxes on the middle class. Now, he's been caught on video suggesting that low- and middle-income Americans are undertaxed.

Here's Mark Halperin -- Mark Halperin!:

This is politically devastating because it plays into people’s preconceived notions of Romney as Monty Burns+Thurston Howell.

But Altmouse sez ... nothing bad in there at all. I think that's a piece of commentary I'm entitled to mock.

David Brooks disagrees, calling the Romney campaign "inept" and comparing his comments to what millionaires say to each other in a column titled "Thurston Howell Romney."

Brooks thinks Romney is trying to be someone he's not, and I think that's pretty obvious.

"Altmouse"? "idiot"?

That is some great "commentary" Stu, mockable all on it's own.

What does Mommy Terese think of commentary like that?

Why am I not surprised A2 agrees with Romney? But hey, we gotta be tolerant of all viewpoints, even as we laugh at some of them.

Althouse reminds me of the truly gutless people who stood by and watched and chuckled as Romney bullied students he had contempt for. It exposes Althouse as one of those people with limited human capacity. For them, this is "no big deal."

The contempt of the 1 percent for those of us who work for a living is nothing new. It's been going on in the Republican Party for decades. It drives the Walker Administration to not even talk to us. So, in a sense, this sort of bully boy behavior is "no big deal" to the upper class people and their political excusers. I get that, and the American people are starting to understand it, too. The more Althouse writes the clearer it becomes.

What are they all going to do? It seems they only have two choices, bad and worse.

He (and they) either step away from these remarks, a move that sends the direct message that the candidate is unfit for office (and an asshole) or they try to pretend they agree with some unsuccessfully spun version of "half the nation (the half that votes for Obama) are subhuman."

Ann Althouse gets paid by the taxpayers of Wisconsin over $160,000.00 a year. In return she does barely any work. She is engaging in tenure abuse.

Ann, I think Romney was talkin' about you!

You're right. It was stupid of Stu to suggest that Althouse is either an idiot or a propagandist.

Clearly she's both.

Romney's comments are dumb, and it's really important to note that the reason 47% of Americans pay no income tax is largely a result of Republican policies, so it's pretty silly to moan about it.

That said, I do take issue with the notion that this is real harmful politically. It seems likely to me that people in the 47% Romney talks about are less likely to think "He's insulting me" than "Yeah! F--- those guys!"
