Sandy as election spoiler excuse

Postby ArturoBandini » Wed Oct 31, 2012 1:36 am

Assuming the relief efforts continue to function smoothly, the storm looks increasingly like a political gift to President Obama...

CBS News Link

I don't think Romney is going to win the election, this storm notwithstanding, but he's in a catch 22 situation at this point regarding post-Sandy campaign strategy. He can't really criticize Obama for doing his job and pulling the levers of federal disaster aid power without enraging almost everyone, and he can't really offer any meaningful assistance to the relief efforts without them being interpreted as crass self-promotion. If he simply continues with his campaign, he will be criticized for not giving sufficient deference to more important relief/recovery efforts. If he waits for the matter to blow over, the election will have passed. I don't see how the situation would be significantly different for any other candidate in this same situation. This is a perfect opportunity for the incumbent to demonstrate his organizational leadership ability, and he will likely succeed. The challenger will get no such opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to the voters, even if he or she were equally capable.

Anyway, I expect Hurricane Sandy to be a popular excuse for Romney's loss in next week's election, and a way for people to paper over his otherwise terrible candidacy.

Well I suppose it is rather difficult to quantify as far as turnout, but I would guess it would affect both candidates equally percentage wise.

As most of the area affected is blue the same percentage of stay-home voters would be a larger number, or more votes for Obama lost. Advantage going to Romney?

On the other hand, the situation itself gives Obama the advantage in the last week by looking Presidential while visiting devastated areas. Probably more effective than campaigning. Advantage Obama.

My guess it is a wash, so no spoiler.

Yeah, I just don't think it's easy to tell yet whether this will have an impact on the race, or in which direction.

Well, I guess it had an impact on at least one congressional race, where the candidate's campaign manager just resigned in disgrace after being named "Hurricane Sandy's Biggest Twitter Troll".

(I had no idea that hurricanes now come with their own trolls... what is the world coming to?)

Some of these false stories briefly made it into the media coverage of the storm. I remember reading a note on one of the news websites about flooding at the NY Stock Exchange ... which apparently was one of this troll's hoaxes.

Report: GOP consultant tweeted false storm news

Romney held a sham campaign rally in Ohio yesterday where he pretended it was a relief effort. They had a photo op collection of canned goods for the Red Cross that the Red Cross explicitly has no use for.

If the mainstream media is so in the tank for Obama, why didn't they highlight this embarassing lack of leadership and judgement on Mitt's part? I suppose they didn't want to have a political dust-up in the midst of a tragedy. Only MSNBC dared to run with it.

Romney's trove of canned goods. Who needs FEMA?

Now it turns out Team Mitt spent $5,000 at Wal Mart the night before, so there would be supplies to showcase even if locals didn't bring anything. Red Cross could have used the 5K a lot more than it can use some canned goods and paper products.

I think Romney and his canned goods is the biggest gift he's given Obama all season. The idea the northeast needs more canned goods is ridiculous on so many levels. The area needs giant water pumps, police security and fire backup personnel, transportation assistance, rebuilding of the electric power infrastructure, chain saws, trucks, emergency housing...

Nobody's going around asking for more canned goods. It's an insult and a joke. The electorate can see the issue of scale involved here, if nothing else.

Romney's idea emergency assistance should be handled and funded locally (or at best by the states) is also ridiculous. No single state should be expected to establish and fund a standing emergency force and emergency equipment on this scale. Most states couldn't. (Why do you suppose states banded together and formed a federal government in the first place? To take care of needs they couldn't meet and coordinate one-by-one.)

And the idea all the coordination and work should be done privately is the most insulting of all. When one of these mega-contractors is hired to do the fixing, first of all we have no control over its behavior. Second, someone (like, for instance, Mitt Romney) makes a profit. The idea of a large entity making a profit on this mess, especially in the first few weeks of recovery, is obscene.

You know what I think? Obama should call the troops home from Afghanistan and put them to work using helping with restoration. We've got engineers, communications specialists, security people, and plenty of strong and disciplined young workers and we need them at home. Now.

I see that Romney is quickly backtracking on his campaign promise to get rid of FEMA if elected.

This isn't going to change anything. I expect to see Americans For Prosperity put up and ad opposing the "bailout" of New York and New Jersey. The right consists of a a lot of psychopaths and sociopaths, who are already claiming Obama seeded the clouds. Whatever is left of the sane Republican Party had better start stomping on these people, or they will be forever discredited.

Theoretically, this is what you'd want all politicians to do. Continually question their own positions and beliefs, examine new data, listen to experts, listen to the people they represent AND CHANGE THEIR MINDS IF THEY DISCOVER THEY WERE WRONG. Not blindly follow some ideology or dig in once they have been proven the fool...

Flip-flopping to score political "points" is offensive (which is what Romney is doing here).

Changing your mind and admitting you were wrong should be commended, not ridiculed or seen as a sign of weakness.

Obama didn't seed the clouds himself; Sandy could only be the work of one Simon Bar Sinister. His hire will go down as the shrewdest decision of Obama's political career.

In this case it was his brother, Iso Bar Sinister.

I see that some right-wing religious nut jobs are saying that Sandy is God's punishment for homosexuality.

Might be better to say "The right includes ..." rather than "consists of", the latter is a bit inflammatory.

As for the idea that Obama secretly engineered Hurricane Sandy either to give him an opportunity to look presidential, or to give him an excuse to cancel the election ... well, when I first heard that I assumed it was a joke.

Not so. From US News & World Report:

Conspiracy Theorists Say Obama Engineered Hurricane Sandy

Needless to say, the mechanism Obama used to gin up the hurricane is ... HAARP. The all-purpose device of DOOM.

Someone should photoshop Obama's face onto Saruman:
