People I'm not yet done with, as of Tuesday

Postby Meade » Thu Nov 08, 2012 2:18 pm

Barack Obama and the 60,193,076 people who, knowing now who he really is and what he truly is all about said, "Yeah, we want more of that."

Congratulations on your win.

You, know, I'm sure this wasn't your intention, but your comment got me to wondering --- are there any voters out there who didn't agree with Obama, but would vote for him because they felt, "well, at least I know who he really is and what he's truly all about." The only way in which Romney was consistent throughout the campaign was in his willingness to completely abandon even his most core principles for the sake of pandering to whatever group he happened to be in front of.

In the Intrade thread Meade wrote this about Obamacare...

Meade wrote:
Phil wrote:Meade-was Governor Romney steering a course towards socialism when a few years ago he championed Romneycare in Massachusetts?

Phil, yes, he was. That's what the majority of Massachusetts voters apparently wanted for their state at the time Romney was governor. Do you believe it's what the majority of voters in every state want? Or do we want something like it, imposed on us by the federal government? Polls say we don't. Today's elections should make that even more clear, one way or the other.

Meade, what did Tuesday's election tell you about Obamacare?

I'm not done with the President and the Vice President. Now more than ever is the time to pressure the Obie and Joe show. Even if they remain the pathetic bunch of Wall Street stooges, militarists and imperialists we know them to be (of course they will). Let's see if Obama was serious when he said Tuesday night, "we need to do something about" GOP-sponsored voter suppression. Actually, Eric Holder and his "Justice Department" have done precious little to stop the Repubs' recurring theft of elections. Let's see if Gov. Scott Walker will be forced, as even Wisconsin's Republican Attorney General has acknowledged, to concede the Affordable Care Act is now the law of the land, and must be fully implemented here.
Foreign policy? Probably a hopeless case, same as always, with more drone strikes in Af-Pak and continuing covert intervention in places USA doesn't belong, like Libya and Syria. But maybe, just maybe, if they stick to their present reluctance to intervene on Israel's behalf, there wil be no Democrat-sponsored war against Iran. I don't intend to let these Dem figureheads off easy the next four years. Just as I've spoken out against our "democratic" mayor Soglin and his mistreatment of the homeless here in Madison, I intend to continue speaking out against corporate dems at all levels. It's time to re-Occupy America!
Having said all that, hopefully last night's abject failure to steal Election 2012 represents the death spasm of the GOP, a party which has shown itself utterly incapapble of reaching out to Blacks, Hispanics, gays, women and really, just about everybody else. The GOP only represents rich white oligarchs, and the worst kind of extreme fundamentalist christians. We'd be better off without the Republican Party; may it rest in pieces!

I have a large number of very liberal friends, who always talk about how long lines, suspect machines, or confusing ballots in Milwaukee (or Miami, or wherever) are disenfranchising minority voters. They only complain on election day.

Democrats are in power in these municipalities. Municipalities control elections. In addition to debating Voter ID, why isn't some time spent over the next two years fixing the various clusterfsck machines or staffing situations in Democratic-majority districts around the country? It is a boring issue to solve, and it removes an excuse when you lose an election. But I have to think that the expenditure of time will yield more votes than the more visible battle over voter ID.

Trouble is, the Constitution gives states control over their elections and attempts by the federal government in protecting voter rights are constantly being challenged in court. The U.S. Supreme Court soon will revisit the Voters Right Act of 1966 because of state challenges. Who knows how that conservative court will rule.

If you're a liberal, and you say that a guy doesn't look like he's going to live to a ripe old age, and he's black, and he's a conservative, then you're a racist.

Hope that helped.

I don't think the state is mandating that municipalities use crappy old machines with no paper trail, or that they be under-staffed.

They might not be mandating that, but by not regulating those practices, they are allowing it. The federal government is relatively powerless, especially if Congress (I'm looking at the GOP controlled House) refuses to attempt to pass laws preventing what the states do or allow. And again, even if they try, states can go to federal court to undo any such laws.
