Gadgets I don't use

Grocery stores, recipes, cook books, CSAs, farmers' markets, organic, local, processed, corporate. It's a smorgabord!

Small items:
Garlic Press
Corn butterer (holds a half stick o' butter)
Corn nobs (you will burn your fingers and you'll LIKE it, mister!)
Cookbook stand
Turkey lifters (I should really use them at Thanksgiving, but forget about them)
Silicone hot pads

Larger items I woefully underuse:
Panini maker
Juicer, partially broken (still works, missing the pulp/skin collector container so we use a plastic bag to catch it)
French Fry cutter
The whip attachment for my stick blender
Quesedilla maker (I actually prefer them made in a large non stick pan)
Waffle maker

Of the bigger items, I think the whip, quesedilla maker and juicer could go away and I wouldn't be upset.

Does anyone still use electric can openers?

When Mrs Rabble broke her arm a couple years ago we bought a battery operated one-handed opener. From Walgreen's I think. It did the job but it was slooooow.

We got one that opened jars with one hand too. Also slow.

I got one about 8 years ago and have never looked back.

It's common knowledge the original Sausage Weasel is fundamentally flawed. What you need is the Weasel II.

Yeah.
I used to think these were the greatest things ever, now I can't imagine why. Apart from the fact that mincing garlic ain't that hard, that mini-chopper works much better than the press ever did anyway. Presses are messy, wasteful, and hard-to-clean, imo.

I don't use one a lot, since I prefer to slice thinly. But for an uncooked dish, it's the best way to evenly distribute that garlicky goodness.

BUT it's nigh impossible to find a good quality one anymore. I've seen some heavily constructed ones, but even these suffer from the common flaws of a loose-fitting plunger and over-large extrusion holes. The former is the worst, since chunky garlic pulp squirts upward as it bypasses the plunger.

As for cleaning, the key is to do it immediately. A stiff bristle brush works for me.

Not a lot of you people are from the "give me a sharp knife and an iron pan and I'm good to go" school, are you?

A good cook could certainly make a meal with just the basics, just like someone could certainly paint a nice picture with fingerpaints. But why would you if there were ways of making better use of your time and energy? I have made meringue with just a balloon whisk and a bowl of egg whites but man it is strenuous and takes forever. Why bother when I can put the egg whites in my Kitchenaid mixer, turn it on high and go across the room to tend to my boiling sugar syrup?
Done in minutes and much better than I could do by hand!

Having an arsenal at hand makes it much faster and easier to make dinner for 14 people without taking days to prep and being a wrung out dishrag by the time guests start to arrive.

Oh, and there was that time I cut my index finger down to the bone with a super sharp Sabatier.

It's also the easiest way to mince garlic. Garlic press + a paring knife. Use the peeled garlic from the coop and it's almost like cheating.

There is no garlic prep you can't do with just a knife:

Never had a use for a press except as a child when I wanted to make Play-Doh hair/worms/spaghetti. Pretty sure that was the only reason my Italian-American mother kept one in the house because she never once used it herself.

Well, sure. There's no chopping or mincing of any kind you can't do with just a knife. Just the same, I'll stick with my chopper, thanks. I can screw stuff by hand too, but it goes a lot quicker and the results are generally better when I use my power drill.
