RwP: Interview with Madison Police Officer Steve Heimsness

Postby Schabow » Sun Sep 23, 2012 7:55 am

Hello all,

This week on Rants Without Pants, I interview Madison Police Officer Steve Heimsness who is also on the board of the Madison Professional Police Association. Officer Steve discusses the protests at the Capitol a year and a half ago, as well as the arrests that are currently happening at the Capitol. I then discuss Gov. Scott Walker's visit to Lindbergh Elementary where he teaches the kids about the constitution of all things.

00:00 - 07:26 Interview with Madison Police Officer Steve Heimsness
07:26 - 09:34 Governor Scott Walker Teaches the Kids at Lindbergh Elementary about the Constitution.
09:34 - 12:47 END RANT

From my blog:

Dang...that puts to rest my suspicion that Walter is a female.

Brutal interview to get through with that background noise. Pj, you've been warned.

I don't get the Aquaman diss. At least he has a special talent, not just a good athlete with lots of money.

Did you get relegated to the basement for some reason? Or did you do the whole show on location?

Your lack of pants does not (ok, no longer) make me nervous.

This definitely needs subtitling or audio post-processing.

BTW, is there such a thing as a quiet bar or bar/cafe in this town?

But if it was in a quiet coffee house, they couldn't talk as freely and all these onlookers would start onlooking and spoil it.

My Minnesota accent is pretty thick. I will grant you that.

Believe it or not I did do audio post-processing, but that was the best I could get it (as an amateur at least). I thought about putting subtitles in, but that would have taken awhile. And doing these weekly takes time already. Martha calls "Rants Without Pants" my mistress.

But you are all correct, Mickey's ended up being a poor choice. It didn't sound as loud when we were there, but whatcha gonna do? Learn from it I guess and next time, hopefully Steve would be up for another interview and if so, we will find a nice quiet place for us to freely rant.

You might do better with different mikes. Lavalier mikes would take care of a lot of the noise, although the sound quality is generally not that great. I've had good results with an active double-cardioid mike set up so it points between me and the interviewee. Each person comes in clearly on either the right or left channels, overwhelming any noise coming straight down the middle, and nothing behind the mike gets picked up at all.

Answer to first question: No, it's our dining room. It has better light, but I am going to be kicked back to our study by the lady.

Response to second comment: It should. Hell, Martha is still uncomfortable with it.

I'm down for a reboot of the interview in your basement with the participants chained to the wall.
