Perhaps you missed Mike Ivey's report that the Edgewater project is being financed by federally tax-exempt Midwestern Disaster Area Bonds, which were created as part of the 2008 Wall Street bailout law (the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act) to aid counties affected by that year's flooding.

So the Edgewater makers are also takers after all. Hope they realized that when they went into the voting booth.

Takers of what? Investments?

The program was established by the federal government to encourage redevelopment of areas impacted by the heavy rains during the summer of 2008

The interest income received by the bondmakers in this program is tax-free, in order to incentivize investment. So you could look at that lost tax revenue as a subsidy.

But between this and TIF (for this specific project), I'd rather they take advantage of this.

The point is that in the brutal talking points favored by tea party conservatives, America is divided into "makers" and "takers" (categorized by Mitt Romney as the 47%). Developers often line up as "makers." They risk investment and create not just jobs, but industry and commerce that lasts for generations. We ought to be thankful and when they ask for less regulation -- economic, environmental, safety -- we should accommodate them.

Get government out of the way, they say, and let them create jobs. They built it!

But they can't really build it without public money. And they rarely do, it seems.

Speaking of the political success that is the Edgewater, soon we won't have Maniaci to kick around anymore.

Maniaci, citing the Edgewater, affordable housing on East Johnson Street, and redevelopment of the former Don Miller auto dealership properties on East Washington Avenue as top achievements,...

LoL. Yes, she achieved these things. With the exception of the Edgewater which she fought tooth and nail to saddled us with 16 million in TIF funds, she has achieved exactly dick-all. Good effing riddance to a clownish developer-fellating whore, I say. Thanks, for her, Cieslewicz, you effing tool.

Thank you, Jason, for explaining my point about makers and takers so well. Not only that, the new Edgewater can now be said to be financed thanks to the much-reviled "Wall Street Bailout," a cousin of Obama's so-called "Failed Stimulus Program." And with disaster funds, at that! The Disaster of Mansion Hill.

This sounds like when Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal used federal Hurricane Katrina relief funds in Louisiana to a while back to make a very sweet and successful bid for manufacturing jobs from Sheboygan. Happens all the time.
