McKayla Maroney is not Impressed

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

A friend long ago married a guy name of Cevin.

That's a new way to spell Kevin, in case you can't tell.

I am not making this up.

I'm of the school of thought that says if you can't spell a name right, name your baby something else.

Or maybe it's the new way to spell the best name of all time, Seven.

When I taught and had students with very unusual names and/or spellings, I later found out they were often born to teenage moms.

I'm sure all the Stephens and Gwendolens of the world agree. The world's Stevens and Gwendolyns, perhaps less so.

(Really, is life so long that you can devote brain space to having a hang-up over how someone's parents spelled a name?)

Or better yet, pronounced seevin with a long e.

That's how I pronounced it when I first met him. I got this icy stare, and then two words: "It's KEV-IN."

o-KAY.

I couldn't figure out why the man didn't just change it and save himself a world of aggravation, but he never did.

He was not easy to get along with, and I always wondered if it wasn't partly that dumb name.

If it is constantly mispronounced because of the weird spelling then the child bears the burden, not the parent(s).

Okay. So you're just thinking of the children?

The spelling of my last name was changed upon entry into the United States to make it look "less foreign." It has been mispronounced by teachers, principals, coworkers and casual acquaintances as long as I can recall.

I can't imagine it would have been any better with the original, but boy that weird spelling sure freaked out some Americans somewhere. Or maybe it was self-consciousness over an American freak-out that caused my relatives to change it. That'd be a shame, wouldn't it?

Language is a beast, accepting of only the loosest bridle. My recommendation: don't sweat it if someone has a different interpretation of the "correct" spelling of a name.

So let's get this back on track. Is anyone here unclear on how "McKayla" is pronounced?

It's SPELLED "McKayla," but it's PRONOUNCED "Throat-warbler Mangrove."

On Ms Maroney's face, that expression looks funny but convincing. But with the president, there's something about the expression that says this guy is trying not to laugh.

She's had a lot of practice. I guess she's been a good sport about it but it must get kind of irritating to be best remembered for the grouchy look on her face when she accepted her silver medal. There are literally thousands of photoshopped pictures all over the web of her making that face. I saw the girls on David Letterman a few months ago and he was teasing her about it too.
