This sucks beyond sucking. I'm stunned and furious.

Sly was the only liberal broadcaster in commercial radio in the entire state.

I will never believe this wasn't politically driven. Sly was a huge thorn in the side of right wing radio.

Will their be room for him at 92.1 The MIC?

This is another step in WI transformation into a red state.

Yes, I'm sure getting rid of Sylvester was at the top of the GOP's list.

Didn't WTDY have right wing shows as well? I see as recently as last year they had Dennis Miller. Or had they made themselves over into a lefty station?

He was not at top of their hit list, but he certainly was a very effective and persistent identifier of right-wing excess and corruption. He has fought tenaciously against the business interests in WI that seem intent on creating a South Carolina-like market, where most of the population works for $12 per hour subsistance wages.

Sly served as a rallying point for the entire state, his broadcasts were shared on the internet. This is not just a Madison thing.

It's possible that Sly was just a victim of a "format change." But it is not far-fetched to wonder if Koch/Freedom Works types are behind his temporary demise.

WTDY has been moving right, Sly was something of a holdover.

It's possible that this is simply a format change, as announced. We''ll see after the holidays.

Will they play nothing but Christmas songs in the interim?

That's the plan.

In the old Soviet Union, whenever one of their furry-browed premiers was gravely ill, the state media would play somber music 24x7. I don't know much about Russian classical music, but I think a month of Shostakovich, or maybe Soviet Army music, might be appropriate.

That reminds me: there's an interesting show on WCBN called Radio Sputnik. (Music from the Soviet era.) I would expect it to be dreary, but it's sometimes oddly compelling music.

I still miss the Mike Malloy show on 92.1. His show was canceled a year or two ago for Madison listeners. Now I have to buy his podcasts.

*Moving* right?

As a talk station, WTDY was an early carrier of both The Rush Limbaugh Show and Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell; the station was also former home for Mark Belling, who would move to the Milwaukee market by 1989 and gain prominence at WISN.

How do you get farther right than Limbaugh and Belling?

I think figuring out how to travel faster than light is easier than that question.

Excellent work.

I know you are no fan of Sly, have compared him to Vicki McKenna in tone, but the guy is a bar room intellectual by my estimation. My definition of an intellectual is somebody who seeks a deep understanding of issues and tries to understand opposing points of view. Despite the shinanigans and occasional bombast, he's conducted more thoughtful discussions on his show than I've heard on any other commercial media talk show.
