Department of Schadenfreude

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

Department of Schadenfreude

Postby snoqueen » Sat Dec 01, 2012 10:37 am

Remember those people who built an enormous trophy home, with a 23-acre private man-made lake, in rural Oregon ten or twelve years ago?

Well, the bank owns it now. And you could own it next:

“It’s a very nice lake,” town of Oregon assessor Andy Blomstrom said.

I didn't want to be a hater but in the photo of his office (#11 in the real estate listing) the guy has a Favre Vikings jersey hanging next to a Nitschke jersey.

So, fuck that guy.

I don't see anything wrong with building the lake for a family that is passionate about water skiing. It's no different than the money people put into big horse riding operations or building your own airstrip and hanger.

The house is typically over-the-top in size but not as stupid-big as the one recently featured up in Door County.

Actually, it looks like a rather boring lake.

Here are some actual "very nice lakes". Here's another. There's lots of very nice lakes here, too.

It looks very clean. Which is nice.

Or maybe they dyed it like lake Delton. Either way, it looks like it was basically made for water skiing. Does kinda limit the pool (no pun) of potential buyers. Probably good for speed skating too!

Not if you like to swim. I'd love to have my own clean, half-mile lake for swimming and sunning.

Oh come on. It looks like someone took a cornfield, bulldozed a large rectangular hole in it, filled the hole with water, and then doused it with copper sulfate or something, to keep stuff from growing.

It's a "lake" in the same way that wonder bread is "bread".

Or, it looks like a half-mile-long pool with fish and a sandy/rocky bottom.

Hate if you've gotta, but I'd swim/float/fish the shit out of that thing.

A lot of suitors for Twinkies, but are there any corporations interested in buying the Wonder Bread brand?

Harrumph. This thread ought to be renamed "Department of The Kind of Aesthetically Deficient People Whose Low Standards Are Gradually Bringing About The Destruction Of Western Civilization".

Henry David Thoreau, in Chapter 9 of Walden ("The Ponds"):

A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. [...]

Nothing so fair, so pure, and at the same time so large, as a lake, perchance, lies on the surface of the earth. Sky water. It needs no fence. Nations come and go without defiling it. It is a mirror which no stone can crack, whose quicksilver will never wear off, whose gilding Nature continually repairs; no storms, no dust, can dim its surface ever fresh; — a mirror in which all impurity presented to it sinks, swept and dusted by the sun's hazy brush — this the light dust-cloth — which retains no breath that is breathed on it, but sends its own to float as clouds high above its surface, and be reflected in its bosom still. [...]

A field of water betrays the spirit that is in the air. It is continually receiving new life and motion from above. It is intermediate in its nature between land and sky. On land only the grass and trees wave, but the water itself is rippled by the wind. I see where the breeze dashes across it by the streaks or flakes of light. It is remarkable that we can look down on its surface. We shall, perhaps, look down thus on the surface of air at length, and mark where a still subtler spirit sweeps over it.

Geez, dismount and stretch, already.

I love a beautiful lake as much as the next guy. I've swum in, lived/sailed/paddled/motored/fished on, and ferried across some of the finest in the world.

You don't have a lock on appreciating limnic beauty, you just lack the imagination to see any value in a bastard steplake.

Le me know when I can get within a block of our local natural lake system during July without gagging. I'll take a crystal-clear man-made lake any day over rotting weeds and fish.
