What do you get when you're stockpiling before a storm?

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

What do you get when you're stockpiling before a storm?

Postby jjoyce » Wed Dec 19, 2012 11:29 am

I ran into Woodies last night with my 13-year old, which definitely influenced my buying decisions. We grabbed the following:

- Egg nog
- Dark chocolate M&Ms (holiday colors!)
- Hebrew Natties and buns
- 1 gallon of skim milk
- Cedar Grove sharp cheddar, 1 block
- One bag Cuties clementines
- One bunch bananas
- butter, flour and sugar for cookie baking

I made a pretty big snack haul at Costco over the weekend and, this being the holidays, our beer selection is good. Other than the milk and fruit, the trip was completely unnecessary.

I have found that after a few years of living a few blocks from Jenny St market I tend to treat it like my own personal backyard pantry and get lazy about stocking up.

We have a tradition of making pulled pork in the crock pot during the first major snowstorm of the year. So, I'll be headed to Jenny St for that and a liquor store for shameful amounts of booze.

That list looks good to me. Popcorn (kernels, to be popped in a pot on top of the stove, then drizzled with salt and butter) is always nice during a snowstorm.

Anyone remember the North Farm co-op distributor that used to be in Madison? They used to let people form buying clubs and do group orders, buying stuff in bulk. We were in one of those buying clubs for quite a while. So at any given time we'd typically have on hand, say, two years' supply of chocolate chips, or 6 dozen jars of salsa, or whatever. I think we saved some money that way, but it also meant that in the event of a blizzard or volcano or what have you, there was always lots of food down in the basement.

This must be a parent thing. Unless this storm is going to be worse than I'm reading (I mean, is it the Mayan stuff?), I'm not feeling any compulsion to stockpile. Never really have.

I've never really understood the "better stockpile, snow will complicate travel for 24 hours" thing. It might be a result of having grown up on a farm or something, but I pretty much always have enough stuff to get by for like, 72 hours at a minimum in terms of food in the house.

My amazing game plan includes maybe going to see the Hobbit tonight and making Jambalaya tomorrow night. This may be influenced by WHEN the snow actually shows up here, though.

It's not so much a compulsion as an impulse. You're at the grocery store to get a couple things and, standing there, you start to think that if it really dumps on us, we might not be able to get to the store for a day or two. That justifies the procurement of some guilty pleasures, as my list illustrates.

I don't think anybody really lays in staples during these things, right? It's mostly for fun and comfort.

Same here- we've developed a snowday tradition of stomping down there in our snow gear and getting treats. Chocolate, ice cream sometimes. Usually apple cider for heating up on the stove, and Ben & Jerry cocktail mix for the adults. We'll usually spend most of a snow day watching movies so as others have mentioned, making sure there is popcorn is key. I like to grab Nueske's bacon from the meat counter and some really good melty cheese and do grilled-cheese-[glutenfree]-sandwich/soup combos for lunch.

I don't know that it's a parent thing, particularly- for me it's more the incredibly relaxing feeling of having nowhere to go, or nowhere to be- there is time to actually cook a complex meal, or to make a kettle of popcorn on the stove rather than grab a quick snack, to simmer half a jug of cider on the stove with spices instead of tossing it into a mug and putting it in the microwave. Since most of what I typically have on hand is geared towards getting dinner on the table quickly after a long day's work, making lunch and/or an elaborate, slow-cooked dinner sometimes requires a few more groceries.

Are the in-laws in town?

I actually like the feeling of having to walk to the grocery store in the blizzard conditions. It's like survivor man for pussies.

Ah, OK that might make a bit more sense and explains why everyone is always stocking up on the same GDamn things (ice cream and booze mostly, it seems).

That being said, since I am a shining knight of virtue and wisdom, I make it a point to only grocery shop once a week (on Sundays! Look for me during Packers games fans!) and plan out my menu for the week, as Mrs. Nate and I pretty much cook every night. Therefore, impulse buys in the middle of the week pre-blizztorm aren't so much a thing.
