Bands that failed to save rock and roll

Postby christopher_robin » Fri Jan 04, 2013 3:44 pm

For at least 20 years we've been hearing about the band who is here to "save rock and roll." White Stripes aside (there's at least an argument to be made there) the format has been without a real new champion since Nirvana.

Bands that failed to make anything interesting happen:

Green Day. These guys tried, and I like them, but didn't really go anywhere with their Buzzcocks redux trip.

Arctic Monkeys. Most over-hyped miss of them all.

Well, the Dictators may not have pulled it off, but they do a great job of posing the musical question:

That's whom I'm rooting for. I hope their follow-up to Brothers and El Camino is just as good as those two.

The Bay City Rollers. They were going to be the next Beatles after all...

How many of these bands claimed they were gonna "save rock'n'roll" as opposed to mainstream press/their promotion machine predicting that for them?

No band is going to save rock'n'roll. People going out to see rock'n'roll bands live, people buying rock'n'roll records, people genuinely being into rock'n'roll instead of boring ipod shlock......that is what will save rock'n'roll.

A surge in The Dictators popularity couldn't hurt.

Remember when Rick Nielsen said that Cheap Trick is better than the Beatles?

It's not like there's no audience for rock; quite the contrary. But the acts moving units are indescribably awful. WHY

Promotion, marketing, the sell out factor and a musically ignorant public who really likes catchy toons vs. good "rock and roll"

I also look at the success of band in terms of their legacy and not albums they sell. For instance, who the fuck is going to remember Linkin Park in 10 years vs. more obscure bands they will withstand the test of time.

Because the music was picked by lawyers not musicians.
