Meat Raffles in Madison ?

Bars, wine, beer, cocktails, drunken escapades

Ususally the bar has 20-30 "packages" of meat to raffle off, which takes several hours. For each package, a set quantity of numbers is sold at a predetermined price (which covers the cost of the meat plus bar profit or charitable contribution). Once all the numbers are sold, a drawing of some sort determines the winning number and, therefore, the winner of that package. Some raffles allow the winner to pick which package they'd prefer- others raffle a specific package at a time.

The raffles I "grew up" with involved 10 numbered paint sticks (the kind they give you at the hardware store to stir your gallon pf paint), each sold for 1 dollar. A second numbered set of sticks was used to determine the winning number (kind of like "picking a card" for a card trick). Once the winner for that round was determined, all the sticks were collected and resold for the next drawing.

And, oh yeah, you tend to drink a bunch of cheap beer while all this is happening.

Thanks for the details. Sounds like it takes up a good chunk of the day for a chance to win. Might be fun to try it sometime...but I probably won't.

Jman described it well. Some places take the profit and raffle it off at the end. Don't know if the Villa Tap has raffles now that they're Chico's Villa Tap. I think raffles are more common in summer when there are fewer butts in the stools.

Thanks for all the recommendations!!
I still think there is a million dollar app out there that finds the nearest fish fry or meat raffle for you.

At some point in the summer of either 2005 or 2006 (these things start blurring together for me) my pal Carl and I were on the way to an APT show and decided to stop off for dinner at Harley Blue in Blue Mounds.

We were chatting with the bartender as he cooked our burgers, and at one point he said, "And next weekend we're having the meat paddles."

I had no idea what the fuck he was talking about, and all I could think of was Dr. Evil's line from Austin Powers about wearing 'meat helmets.'

Fortunately the bartender was able to explain about the meat raffle, and the little paint stirrer things with the numbers on it.

So - as I learned, a 'meat paddle' is not something sexual.

Or at least not in this context.

I know that Chief's on Cottage Grove Rd. is having a meat raffle this Saturday. They use the $1/paint stirrer method and my wife and I cleaned up there back in November. We ended up with a couple of stuffed pork tenderloins, some smoked trout, salmon patties and something else I'm forgetting. I think they have a meat raffle most Saturdays.

Guy at Baldwin St. Grill just told us they do them every Sunday and all the meat is from Jenifer St. Market.
