Top shelf album art

Music news, rumors, what you're listening to, how you're listening to it and whether it's all on the up-and-up.

Top shelf album art

Postby christopher_robin » Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:42 pm

These days you can't see a damn thing in the horrible "art" that goes with digital files -- that's obvious. But I think even CDs are pretty poor in this regard.

One of the best things about vinyl is the tremendous real estate for art and liner notes afforded by the format.

You have to flip the album every twenty or so minutes, so as often as not during the golden age of vinyl a fan might settle into an immersive album experience by firing up the turntable, dropping the needle on side one, and then settling into a comfortable chair with the sleeve and jacket to look over the art and liner notes.

What are some of the best examples of this moribund pop art form?

Perhaps the most iconic of them all:

Simple, beautiful, tied to the thematic content.

I scored this one a few years ago, pristine with a functional wheel that spins the images:

This one was conceived (cough) by Warhol and had a functional zipper, which revealed a surprise.

Marq Spusta makes some amazing album and poster art. I was lucky to get an original print by him for Christmas.

The Quadrophenia album with the photo booklet is a stunner. Those pictures are an important part of the storytelling.

Way back in high school I wore through my first copy of Zep III and bought a replacement. What to do with the old one? Why, liberate the wheel from the jacket, of course. All through my college years and well beyond I had that on my wall but it disappeared somewhere along the line.

I miss it.

Since the image you posted doesn't seem to allow hotlinking, I found another source:

I remember when I figured out what was going on in this picture after really looking closely for the first time.
