OK. I'd ask the same question of Meade, but I think he is more concerned about the spelling of a Civil War heroes' names. Or at least he was, until he found his foot in his mouth.

Hen V, by "rational" can I assume you mean insane?

Any rational restrictions (based on your definition)?

Rational restrictions are appropriate. Insane restrictions are not. The right to keep and bear arms is obviously not absolute.

The devil is in the details. What about universal background checks for all purchases? Tracable ammo? Ban on high capacity semi-automatics (which aren't needed for hunting or personal defense)?

Or do you just want to regulate video games and/or put all the blame on the mentally ill?

Henry it sounds like you don't acknowledge that mental illness played a significant role in the big shootings we've seen.

Do you think they just HAPPENED to be mentally ill?

No doubt. But does the U.S. have a greater rate of mental illness than the rest of the industrial world, which has a much less lower rate of gun violence than we have? I agree, untreated mental illness is a national tragedy. But allowing easy access to the overabundance of firearms in the U.S. is also a tragedy.

So what rational restrictions on firearms and ammo would you consider?

I would ban online sales.

To make sure people pay the sales tax they're supposed to.

It doesn't need to have more cases of mental illness, it just needs to have worse treatment, which I think we probably do given that our healthcare is worse overall. Better mental healthcare would almost assuredly be more effective than more gun laws, no matter how reasonable those laws are.

I'm certain this comment will be considered racist, maybe it is... What would the Teapers think of Guns Across America if it was created and attended by nothing but 500 young inner city Milwaukee men with gang clothes and open carry guns. That would certainly change the tone of things, considering I don't see a lot of people of color at any Tea Party events.

First of all, what are "gang clothes"? And second, you're right - you probably are racist.

At the risk of driving Hen V deeper into his gun control fantasy world, I have to say I agree with Prof. Quincy Adams on this one.

We need a combination of common sense restrictions on sales plus an improved interface between mental health and legal system records and gun sales databases. There will still be holes, no doubt about that. Internet gun sales is just a dumb idea-anyone can get a piece. Banning actual assault weapons (not 22s that look like ARs) is a start. Big clips, automatics too. Semi-autos is hard to say because they can be used for sporting purposes. Unfortunately, the gun lobby is so entrenched, nothing will come to fruition unless a case makes it to the SCOTUS which forces their hand on the 2nd Amendment.
