Jindal to GOP: Stop being the stupid party

Postby bdog » Sat Jan 26, 2013 8:47 am

Via Althouse:

Bobby Jindal tells it like it is

“We’ve got to stop being the stupid party. It’s time for a new Republican Party that talks like adults,” he said. “We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. I’m here to say we’ve had enough of that.”

It's the smart move. Jindal was always smarter.

Or as Alternet puts it, Republican Says GOP Should Stop Being 'the Stupid Party'; GOP Keeps Being Stupid.

It would be disastrous in the extreme to have a Republican president for the next ten years or so till they manage to calm down the mass hysteria they created but never controlled. Jindal might have a chance (and might even be a decent president) if he goes independent or jumps parties but the current GOP would never let him get even close to a nomination.

Why weren't moderate Republicans saying this before the election? Are they really ready to stand up to their Tea Party contingent as well as right-wing religious kooks?

Because moderate Republicans were still afraid of the Tea Party contingent and speaking out could mean you get labeled a RINO and suddenly have a primary to contend with.

They say stupid shit because they believe stupid shit. Akin wasn't pandering, he was speaking from the heart. Same with Romney and his 47% comments.

They will be the party of stupid until they stop believing stupid shit.

Because there are none. Well, there are maybe two from Maine but that's about it.

Right - even thought they still think "the 47%" is a real thing:
"We must compete for every single vote," he said, laying out one of his seven steps to return to electoral victory. "The 47 percent and the 53 percent. And any other combination of numbers that adds up to 100 percent.

And, GOP, quit standing in the way of people being really, really happy.
Click this link and look at the pictures if you haven't felt really, really happy in a while.

Jindal's no moderate, and he doesn't actually want the GOP to change anything beyond its most superficial PR problems.

Jindal just proposed a radical revision of his state's tax code that would raise taxes on 80% of the population while drastically cutting taxes for the rich. His "stupid party" line was just to get attention, but when it comes down to policy he's just another generic conservative Republican.

And, of course, a retraction of sorts because he is campaigning.

Update - 6:47 p.m. - Jindal communications director Kyle Plotkin e-mails:

You are seeing it the wrong way.
The Governor has been clear that it is the job of Republicans to be fiscally responsible and balance the budget.

Paul Ryan has been doing more serious work in that vein than anyone in government and the Governor is grateful for it.

Paul is a friend of the Governor's and has his full-throated support.

The Governor made clear that fiscal conservatism and stopping President Obama's spending is vital.

His point is that budget balancing is a tool, not an agenda or a vision for a party. We have to have an agenda that is bigger than the numbers in the federal budget.

Because I'm not saying what I meant I said. The ability to talk out of two sides of your mouth is an amazing Republican tactic. Here's the deal, stand for something or don't. Having it both ways is what lost the presidential election.

He's definitely gaining ground but he's still too moderate for the nomination.

Meh, chickens coming home to roost. Republicans have been grooming single issue voters for decades now. They've filled their camp with racists, religious zealots and gun-totin' madmen and now complain that people are acting dumb?

Yeah, when you have an entire party based upon benefiting the top 1%, you're going to have to attract some morons to back you up. Now that the Republican base is 90% morons, the 1% is becoming alarmed.

Your bed. Lie in it.

The official communications arm of the GOP is taking Jindal's advice:
RealClearPolitics reported on Friday that Sarah Palin will no longer be a Fox News contributor.

Maybe he could offer some cheap flowers, a few sweet words, sing a bar or two of Barry White.
