Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, others subpoenaed in redistricting case

Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and other officials have been subpoenaed as part of a long-running legal fight over how the state's latest election maps were drawn.

Two groups sued the state over the Republican-drawn maps. They want to examine certain state computers for evidence of documents the state may have wrongfully withheld, but contend that state officials won't tell them where those computers are located.

So subpoenas were served last week on Vos; Senate Chief Clerk Jeffrey Renk; Assembly Chief Clerk Patrick Fuller; and the Legislative Technology Service Bureau, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report.

For five months, the plaintiffs have sought to search the computers used for redistricting to find out why they didn't receive documents that were supposed to be released to them and to find out whether any other records were improperly withheld. But they haven't been able to find out where the computers are kept.

Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca said he couldn't understand why the state refused to tell the plaintiffs where the computers were.

"This is public property that people pay for," the Kenosha Democrat said. "The fact they won't share this information is beyond comprehension."

The subpoenas, issued Friday, are an attempt to compel officials to produce the computers, hard drives, compact discs and documents. The plaintiffs want the officials to testify under oath about the computers.

Let's see if they dare lie under oath, although the old excuses of "I can't remember" or "I can't recall" might be their way out.

Looks like Vos is already going that route.

Vos said last week in an interview that he knew nothing about where the redistricting computers were located. He could not be reached Friday, but an aide acknowledged receipt of the subpoena.

Which to be fair, doesn't surprise me that much. Why else would you hire an outside firm to handle the process if not for plausible deniability?

The closest these corrupt motherfuckers ever got to transparency was when they sat next to the overhead projector in grade school.

You missed the good part from the link -- the last paragraph:
Jeff Ylvisaker, director of the Legislative Technology Services Bureau, said two of the state computers used in redistricting are now in Fitzgerald's office. He said the third is "controlled by" the Assembly chief clerk, although neither he nor the chief clerk would say where that computer is now.

Ya gotta love 'em, these Republicans.

Brilliant

now the questions is are the sitting in a corner somewhere in case they need data off of them, or did they get re-imaged for someone else to use?

Which would at the very least be contempt of court.

Only if they did it after the court order.

It would probably violate the open record law, if it still applied to the state legislator.

Geez people get a grip. Yes GOP is guilty of redistricting shenanigans, but no more so than Dems. Why when something comes up that both parties are obviously guilty of, do we have to be partisan and point the finger at the party of opposite choice?

It is a blight of gross election rigging practiced by both, and disregard for the will of the people... well most people. which ever party is in power gets to redraw when area population changes.

Geez Sandi, I think you're missing an important point here. Have a slice of sno:
snoqueen wrote:To be fair, the Democrats would redraw districts in their own favor too. It's silly for the R's to stand around and lie about their intentions.

What's extra-offensive here is to have it done on the public dime by a private law firm out of public sight.

Redistricting instead should be done by a panel of retired judges or some other politically (more) neutral body, as it is in a number of other states.

It's the shenanigans, stupid. (Calm down, I'm butchering a well-known quote here...)

Thank the lord that we have even-handed, independent minded voters like Sandi to let us know when we're becoming too partisan. It's like when Meade and Ned decided to hang the entire Benghazi tragedy around Barack Obama's neck... Sandi was having none of that. She gave them the whatfor and explained to them that they were being too partisan.

Keep up the good work, Sandi. With cogent analysis like this, you're bound to end up in Jason's top two.

So the Dems are as guilty of gerrymandering as the Dems. Could someone - Sandi perhaps? - tell me when was the last time everyone in both parties agreed that the reason the Dems kept power was because of their creative gerrymandering?

Or is Sandi quietly gloating that the Republicans are better at it? When you throw away all pretense of fairness and honor it's much easier to exploit a system flaw. In that sense, the Republicans are better equipped to do that.

Wrong. Completely, totally, factually, provably wrong.
