How many people are reading the paper saying, "HOLY SHIT, Daryl Hannah is against this so I probably should be too." I know I'm being a cynic, but I'd rather these folks take that time to organize other people and try to persuade their reps. rather than cuff themselves to the White House.

Yes some people are influenced by celebrities. Springsteen and Katy Perry seemed to help Obama. And Keystone is a fairly big issue.

What could possibly go wrong? I see no downside.

It wouldn't exactly be the first pipline crossing our mother's supple skin:

Ah. There's some pipe there already, and there's oil in some of them, so let's throw another two thousand miles of it across thirty percent of our water supply. And cross an earthquake zone while we're at it. Because we've been laying pipe forever and it's been working out fine.

Got it.

So it's clear that we don't need another one.

So you're saying that private industry would spend billions of dollars on an unneeded pipeline?

Makes sense to me.

You will notice the map includes several large parts in South Dakota and Nebraska that do not have many pipeline crossings. These are areas that have important near surface groundwater and surface water resources, and whose citizens have protected those resources. These are the areas that the Keystone pipeline is attempting to cross. It's not as if these are unreasonable states. They tend to be solidly conservative and rural, but they are also quite knowledgeable that you, your livestock and your crops don't survive long on the arid plains with contaminated water. And it's not like the oil pipeline industry is the most successfully run industry out there. Essentially, there are constant leaks in the few pipelines that cross these states, and every leak makes news. At least one pipeline/tank farm leak resulted in a federal Superfund site, and closed down a school because hydrocarbon contamination.

The other point to make is that the Keystone pipeline is going to clear the oil glut in the Midwest by making it easier to export oil. Part of the reason for lower gas prices in the Midwest is this glut. Building the Keystone pipeline will increase your gas prices and decrease the prices for China.

So you're saying that private industry would never spend billions of dollars on something solely for profit which is detrimental to the environment and poses a danger to humans?

Makes sense to me.

More sky is falling conjecture and nonsense from the Society for the Protection of the Buggy Whip.

Clearly, there's already thousands of miles of pipleline running through every state and topography with little or no harm to the environment. Obviolusly, this technology works within a reasonable safety tolerance.

The left is in full freak out mode as we find more and more natural gas and oil in North America dispelling the "peak oil" lie and dashing their hopes of a windmill and solar panel future.

Yes, clearly.

And that's just from the last 13 years.

Hey, I have an idea: Put the Canadian shale oil in big buckets and drive it down to Texas in Priuses. Green!

Yep. Except for the part where we lay waste to vast tracts of Canadian land to fill the buckets. Regrettable but necessary collateral damage.

Oh! The humanity! 25 barrells!

"2003 A 16-inch Citgo petroleum products pipeline failed in Cook County, Illinois on July 10. About 25 barrels of gasoline were spilled from the pipeline. A crack in the pipe had developed at a dent. There was no fire or injured reported"
