Elizabeth Warren: Kicking Ass, Taking Names

Postby Mean Scenester » Mon Feb 18, 2013 10:10 am

Elizabeth Warren's line of questioning to federal regulators during last Thursday's Senate Banking Committee hearing is on track to surpass a million views on YouTube. This one's really worth a look if you haven't caught it. If you've ever wondered what it looks like when a Senator earns her paycheck, this is it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mavB1lbtIow

This woman is tough and I'm sure it's no picnic sitting on the receiving end of her inquiries, but ... what a piss-poor batch of answers these "regulators" muster on this. "I will have to get back to you .... " Yeah, you do that.

Here's a hint: If you're going before a Senate committee for questioning, do your homework and come to the table with some actual goddamn answers, boneheads. These people look like children trying to explain away having gotten caught with their hands in the collective cookie jar. And something tells me that's pretty much how it all went down.

Thanks for making the right choice on this one, good people of Massachusetts.

Cute, Ned. Did you watch the clip? Anything to add pertaining to the Wall Street meltdown and the government's failure to hold those responsible, um, responsible? I don't really see this as a political issue, but if your solution to criminality by the big banks is to crack Indian jokes, go for it.

Anyone know why the price of gas has gone up about 50 cents/gallon in the last few months? Has there been a hurricane that disrupted supply? Reduced production among OPEC nations? No? Just Wall Street speculators using obscene cash reserves to artificially drive up the price?

The crazy thing is, Elizabeth Warren is fighting for Ned, but he's too myopic to realize it. Republicans good, Democrats bad.

Isn't it part of Obama's "all of the above" energy approach?

Weird, I saw NedF as the terminal post here after reading PJs post at the end of the thread and after going somewhere else and coming back. Clicked in and saw PJ as the end post. After scratching my head I went back and saw NedF as the terminal post then went back in and saw PJ again at the end. Then I refreshed the browser once or twice and found Meade plopped in at the end. I'm not quite sure how things work here but there must be a more more reasonable explaination than Mr. Meade is having trouble juggling socks.

Gas prices always go up at this time of year. Most refineries schedule maintenance during January and February, as gas demand is lowest during these months. Plus, we're entering the stage where refineries start switching over to summer blends, which pushes prices up, too. Speculators certainly add to this, as they'll increase their bets leading up to this natural trend.

True. Also, CA requires exotic custom blends, hence the the high prices there. Also, because US shipping prices are high, it costs more to send oil from the Gulf to East Coast refineries, so a lot if it goes to Africa.

The Fed is stoking inflation to monetize the USA's debt. We certainly can't cut spending or raise taxes. And that whole 'grow your way out of it' idea doesn't seem be working.

Get used to rising prices. Bernanke basically said as much.

Inflation, the cruelest tax...

Yes, but that's been policy for over five years now, it doesn't explain the recent increase at the pump.

These things take time. Its doesn't happen immediately or all at once. Now that the economy is starting to mend you'll start to see this kind of 'unexplained' price-rise start to become more common.

But there is an explanation behind the recent increase, as typically happens this time of year. You're just choosing to ignore it.

From late January...

U.S. refiners last week cut their crude oil processing rate to a 20-month low, due to refinery snags and the start of seasonal maintenance, data from the Energy Information Administration show. The drop in crude runs of 895,000 barrels a day was the largest in any week since September 2008, when Hurricane Ike ravaged Gulf Coast refineries.

Or, from today:

He says this is the time of year when oil refiners start to focus on shifting away from the production of winter blend gasolines and toward the cleaner burning summer blends required by the Environmental Protection Agency. But Laskoski says in order to make that switch, refineries need to first perform routine maintenance work. And that means right now many refineries are operating at about 80 percent capacity.

There's always an explanation for markets' movements. All you have to do is watch CNBC for ten minutes and you'll 'learn' why this market did that, or why some piece of data moved some market.

The problem is, 90% of the time its all bullshit and its a storyline that's backfitted to the reality of the markets' supply and demand.
Supply and demand directly affected by the Fed's printing.

If you are truly interested in the economics of the petroleum industry (a topic guaranteed to get the babes at parties), I suggest reading the blog Econbrowser, collaboratively written by the UW's Menzie Chinn and UCSD's James Hamilton. Hamilton is an expert on the oil industry, peak oil, and the machinations of pricing, all of which, it turns out, is surprisingly complicated.

Care to back that up with facts or statistics or do we just take your word for it.
