Although I don't agree with this as a reason to not vote, I at least find it plausible. The "I'm not voting, because everyone is telling me I have to" is simply an excuse, unless you've been sitting out the last umpteen elections that have been declared the most important of our lifetime.

I read the OP more as "I'm not voting because I don't care about these candidates AND I'm irritated at how many people shout "vote now!" at me everywhere".

People post on here constantly to vent their irritation at stuff - no reason IMO that Joyce can't also and I'm kinda surprised you guys don't see it as such. I think the "you're not voting WHAAAAAT?!?!" response is more or less in full effect here.

I've never found a reason not to vote, and plenty of reasons to vote. I vote in every election. You never know when that "right" is going to be stripped from you, and the Supreme Court race is reason enough to vote.

Just understanding the history of the franchise, and how it is subject to the whims of state and local officials is enough for me. Every vote, no matter for whom it is cast, is a blow against autocracy and exclusion.

My grandmother told me about the years when women couldn't vote in Iowa, yet they could in Wyoming. My mother told me about how racial minorities were excluded from voting, and my father-in-law related how he wasn't allowed to register to vote because he was an Indian. I go to vote out of respect for their struggles and their humiliation at being thought not capable of casting a vote.

I make sure I'm informed. If I can't find a candidate that matches my ideals, I vote for the least of the evils. I don't ever let the cynicism of the political elites discourage me from being a full fledged citizen. That's what the elites are counting on.

Somebody asked why. How about - trying to resuscitate the forum as a possible purpose.

He tried to gin up some stuff on that school board thing (confusing clubbiness with partisanship) and noting both that he didn't care and implying everybody SHOULD care.

Next he'll post that he's thinking about killing puppies. We're ready for you, man. We LOVE puppies.

You know what I hate more than the generic "Go vote!" missives? Those "Call Justice Gotnosack and tell her you stand with her in her efforts to ensure fairness and blah-dee-fucking-blah-blah-blah ... " commercials.

Really? Is her office staff so completely idle that they welcome these meaningless telephonic backslaps? And is Rocksinherwhatsis so insecure in her effectiveness on the bench that she needs every easily persuaded boob-tube-suckling yahoo telling her how great they think she is for "standing up for Wisconsin" or whatever hollow pabulum is currently in vogue among the overpaid ad agencies pushing this nonsense?

Fuck that horseshit.

By the way, there are some who believe journalists shouldn't vote. Maybe I'm done voting forever.

There is no better service done for the public than an informed citizen voting. If any group should be voting, it is journalists.
