Tenth anniversary of the Iraq War

Postby kurt_w » Tue Mar 05, 2013 9:07 am

So, here we are at the 10th anniversary of what turned out to be a vast, stupid mistake. A pointless war that cost too many lives, ran up hundreds of billions of dollars in debt (and will ultimately cost the economy trillions), and weakened America's standing in the world.

Have we learned anything from this?

They piss on our faces and tell us its a warm spring rain? The warfare society is very well rooted, empire building, engaged in brigandage, piracy, and handing the U.S.A. public the bill. But hey, I think I see a nice place on Mt. Rushmore for them.

The same could have been asked about Vietnam, and the answer (as shown by Iraq) was no.

So I think the answer to your present question is also no. One reason is that successive generations seem to need to keep learning the same lessons until some structural change occurs and shifts the focus.

We may be in one right now, in that we're getting agreement on not only the left but parts of the right that we can't afford this any longer.

The Islamists had to be engaged and contained. Iraq was as good a beach head as any.

Says the chickenhawk. Even though American troops are no longer engaged in battle in Iraq, they continue to die because of that unnecessary war. The suicide rate among former U.S. fighters is still growing.

Yet you and your beloved Republicans refused to pay for it. In fact, you demanded a tax cut.

If Iraq was supposed to contain the Islamists, how come they moved to Africa?

So did the Nazis. It's better than lower Manhattan.

Come on. "Islamism" was pretty much irrelevant in Iraq under Hussein. Now it's present in all forms, from suicide bombers to the ruling political parties.

Look at the coalition that came to power in Iraq after the US overthrew Hussein. Its major parties are:

(1) The Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, an Iranian-backed party formerly known as the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq.

(2) The Sadrist Movement, a Shiite fundamentalist party and one that led the opposition to the US military presence in Iraq.

(3) The Islamic Dawa Party, another Iranian-backed party.

Now, maybe the Iraqi people want to be ruled by an Islamist government. If that's the case, then you could make the argument that bringing something resembling "democracy" to Iraq helped the Iraqi people get what they want, although it unleashed a lot of violence in the process.

But there's no way you can claim that invading Iraq was somehow a success in "containing Islamism". The result of the war was exactly the opposite.

The war was going to pay for itself, right? We'd be in and out quickly, we'd leave our buddy Ahmed Chalabi running the country, and US-based oil companies would get first dibs on all those new oil fields. That was the plan.

Were I an Iraqi, I would consider this closer to the 22nd anniversary of the Iraq War.

By your logic, then, Eisenhower should have landed on the coast of Virginia rather than that of Normandy.
