Big ups to Sundrop. Maybe it was just a northern Wisconsin thing, but Sundrop has always tasted much better than Mountain Dew. I don't think I even saw Dew around much until the late 70s.

However, they have never gotten their Diet Sundrop quite to the same level as Diet Dew.

I always thought Sundrop was something that came from the South.
"Sun Drop was developed in New Haven, Missouri, by Charles Lazier, a salesman of beverage concentrates".

Sundrop doesn't have the caffeine of Mt. Dew does it?

Forgot to add:

+ Ting
+ Boylan's Original Birch Beer
+ Sioux City Sarsaparilla
+ I think I would miss Dr. Pepper if it and Mr. Pibb went away. So I think everyone should try either of those too.

Yes, Sundrop *came* from the south - but from a Wisconsin standpoint, it seems that it was much more common in the northern part of the state than the south. My wife had not heard of it before she traveled up to my home town.

Also ditto on the 50/50 comment.

+1 on 50/50
+1 on Vernors
Fresca
RC Cola
Swiss Creme(But I don't know if they make that anymore)
Barq's Root Beer
Mountain Dew Code Red(I know it's disgusting and delicious at the same time)
+1 on Dr. Pepper(Is Mr. Pibb still around?)

And on the flipside, I hate Klarbrunn. I don't know if this counts as a soft drink, but I find it repulsive.

I think I remember liking 50/50 as a kid, only it was Canada Dry.

What in the hell is Vernor's anyway? I thought I was the only one who ever drank it, but most stores seem to carry it, so perhaps it has some cult following. A checker girl once asked me what it tastes like and I had to think for a second. Er, slightly fruity ginger ale? She wrinkled her nose as she slid it down the conveyor belt.

As a Jew from Detroit, Vernor's was a staple in our household. I don't think I can ever remember a time where we didn't have several cases stacked up in our back porch.

And it wasn't just our house, I remember all my friends and neighbors being the same way. It was just as common as milk. In fact, we would trade in our old recyclable bottles for Vernor's most of the time at the neighborhood grocer.

I rarely see it being consumed here in Wisconsin outside of family. It's certainly worth a try to those not familiar. I know people who are not fond of ginger ale but love Vernor's.

To answer PJ, it's ginger ale... only better.

I have no idea. But I do know what it used to be. In the mid-60s, in our household, children were forbidden to drink any kind of pop except for special occasions.

The only exception was Vernor's –– if you were feeling unwell. Back then, you could actually taste the ginger.

The fuck if it's either of those things.

I've never found anyone who likes Vernor's who didn't have some fond childhood memory of the stuff. Which makes sense I suppose, since there's absolutely nothing redeeming about it. Stuff tastes like watered down cough syrup.

For real ginger taste in a soft drink I prefer something like Reed's Ginger Beer.
