Words that have lost their meaning

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

Looks like I'm not as predictable as you. Perhaps in the next forty years you'll choose a new, even more clever invective than "douche". It is possible. But I'm not risking the farm on it.

You still have an ownership share in the Blaska family farm?

You are half right. The bag part for some reason has dropped out of favor lately, I think this to be shameful.

Not here. While I only use it sparingly, I will always use it fully.

Sorry to impale one of your fantasies. But I've never had an ownership in the Blaska family farm. Speaking of fantasies, have you suceeded in turning it into a state owned-collective yet?

I was at a meeting where the chair responded to every comment by saying, "Awesome," and "He gets it."

"Healthy" has completely displaced "healthful" and "healthily" You don't eat healthful hoods, you eat healthy foods, you eat a healthy diet (not healthful) and you eat healthy, not healthily. Healthy used to be the adjective describe the individual or individual qualities (" a healthy respect"). Now it's the only health word, thanks to advertising.

There is no past tense of "spit" anymore. "She spit on me!" has replaced "She spat on me!"

1970 appears to be the great watershed, although the Google Ngram doesn't suggest "healthy" displaced "healthful" and "healthily," since their curves don't change significantly. Maybe "healthy" is just being used more? Or maybe it has replaced something else?

Retard. It's original definition was '...to cause a functioning system to temporarily become non-functional, as in ...'
'to retard the spark in a sparkplug'. Then it was used to describe developmentally disabled (differently-abled) persons. Then, THAT was deemed offensive, so a person can get into trouble calling someone retarded, which I do all the time lately. But I'm using the original definition of the word, because I have faith that people are only being douchebags, temporarily. My argument is that if the 2ndary meaning of the word is no longer used, I should be free to use the original definition of the word. I think 'retarded' exactly identifies someone one has known for decades who obviously is temporarily not functioning. The hope is that the word will 'spark' them into getting their head out of their ass.

To palm off something. Everybody thinks it's "pawn off," and I just saw it in a novel yesterday.
