Cultural Insensitivity

Cultural Insensitivity

Postby Stu Levitan » Sat Mar 30, 2013 7:23 am

The Marquette Neighborhood Association held its only aldermanic forum the first night of Passover. The Tenant Resource Center held its "Iron Chef" fundraiser the afternoon of Good Friday. I support both great organizations, but I think this shows a cultural insensitivity that's kind of disheartening.

The NCAA continued their basketball tournament games as well.

I am shocked and offended.

I expect more from the MNA and TRC than I do from the NCAA.

Yeah, and I heard that the Pope got a little too Jesus-y and washed the feet of a Muslim woman! Any day now he's going to start asking Flanders to care about poor people. I suppose the Pope also thinks that poor people deserve health care? That we should spend more money on our citizens than our military?

It sure is a tough time to be a Catholic.

Most Christians go about their business on good friday afternoon.

The Passover night scheduling could be more of a problem. I wouldn't use the word insensitivity, more of an oversight.

Do you expect them to be sensitive to all cultures?

Are you?

I was impressed that the super in friend's apartment is bringing over a new refrigerator tomorrow, Easter. Turns out he's Serbian and orthodox Easter is May 5.

When do NBA playoffs end? I wonder if they would schedule around Juneteenth.

I'm not a religous man, but I respect all three Sabbaths - no work from Friday thru Sunday.

The city has by ordinance forbidden its boards and commissions to meet in conflict with religious observances. That's why Landmarks meeting, which would have been held on Monday, was cancelled. Can't meet coming Monday, either. I don't think it's too much to ask groups engaged in civic activities to show similar respect. To hold an aldermanic forum at a time when Jews cannot attend, or an eating event during Lent, particularly on Good Friday, is just wrong.

Are you?

I try to be.

Better take Thursday off too. It's the Seventh Day Adventist's Sabbath.

By which ordinance, Stu? 39.03 Equal Opportunities?
Thanks.

We can only hope that the Landmark Commission is as sensitive to other people's religions as they are to its appointed but not anointed leader's religion. It might never meet again... if we're lucky.

Stu is right - both organizations showed a lack of sensitivity for two major religious holidays. There is no excuse for what they failed to do.

What's the difference between a major and minor religious holiday?

How do most Christians commemorate good friday afternoon? I remember the grueling "stations of the cross" ceremony as a Catholic school lad, but I was a captive audience. I don't think many Christians do anything special on good friday, other than usual TGIF behaviors.

I agree with you to an extent, a mistake was made in not scheduling around Passover. But the fact that no Jewish people were involved in the project is the likely explanation. I suppose every social and civic organization should have a calender of religous holidays at hand, but I don't call them "insensitive" for their lack of rigor.

It's time for a reality check. The Jewish population in WI is about 0.5%, around 2% nationally

The most prevalent non-Christian religon in Wisconsin is Islam (who knew that Bahai was the largest non-Christian group in South Carolina? Arizona a Hindu hotbed. Judging by yoga mat sales, Buddhists in California no surprise.)

I didn't realize Easter was coming up today until last Wednesday. But I suppose I represent a very low bar for sensitivity.

Don't feel left out. I didn't figure it out until Saturday night.

People having a scheduling conflict with a religious holiday need to point it out to whoever is doing the scheduling. With all the religions out there (your map is a good reference) we all have to stand up for ourselves instead of getting huffy because someone else didn't do it for us. Of course people like me who don't observe anything at all get left out -- does that mean we can declare our own floating holidays at will? Or do we just default to Festivus?

I'm surprised the religion of the Hmong people doesn't register on the map in Minnesota and Wisconsin. And how come Delaware is full of Hindus?
