"RADICAL Islam"

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

"RADICAL Islam"

Postby Meade » Mon Apr 22, 2013 12:57 pm

What does it mean? http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nati ... full.story

Is being a "radical" a bad thing? Wasn't current Madison mayor, Paul Soglin, widely known and celebrated as a "radical" back in the early 70's? Are Soglin's values still "radical"?

I believe "radical" is what's known in the English language as an "adjective". When combined with a "noun" it changes or more accurately describes that "noun". When used in conjunction with hippies in the 60's, like our current mayor, it describes a particular type of hippie. When used as it is in "radical Islam" it's describing a certain sect of a gigantic religion. The word "radical" itself can easily be googled by anyone not interested in steering a disingenuous debate designed to score political points as demonstrated here:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=radical
A "radical" scrap-booking group might use non-standard scrap-booking media or make scrap books that are 4 feet wide where a non-radical might stick with the stuff in the store. A "radical" conservative might want to repeal the Civil Rights act where a non-radical conservative.... Sorry I have completely forgotten what a non-radical conservative is.

As indicated in the article, "radical Islam" is actually from an FBI source either quoting from or characterizing from an earlier foreign (presumed to be Russian) report on one of the two suspected Boston marathon bombers. It is not possible, given all the embedded layers of ambiguity and the failure to report more fully, to know what exactly is meant by "radical Islam," but it probably refers to one of several groups or belief systems within the Islamist world that is more prone either more extremist or fundamentalist views on religions matters and/or to more violent actions.

I don't think there is any good or bad connotation to the word "radical." Even in the context of Islam, one can have radical views on religious matters, but not be violent. By way of analogy, consider, for example, certain Dominionist Christian sects in America, who hold radical religious views and who often take extreme political stances as a result, but who mostly are non-violent.

No, not that I remember. The Armstrong brothers, yes; Soglin, no.

For many people, someone who choses to work within the system cannot, by definition, be defined as "radical." A "radical" wishes to remove the system and (possibly) replace it with something else. Thus the Koch brothers, the Bradley family, the Walton family, Michelle Rhee, etc. are "radicals" in terms of education--they wish to destroy public education and replace it with public funding of private corporations that pretend to teach our children. Second Amendment fundamentalists are "radicals," because they wish to dismantle the balance of rights enumerated in the constitution in favor of an absolutist right to bear arms. Dominionists are "radical" Christians in that they wish to see secular authority overthrown and replaced with an oppressive theocracy. Wahhabists are "radical" Muslims in that the wish to see secular authority overthrown and replaced with an oppressive theocracy.

See how that works?

New drinking game? Excellent.

In the old game, we got to drink when somebody said Nazi.

In the new game, everyone takes a toke when somebody says radical.

doppel's post above qualifies for both, obviously.
