North Sherman Avenue Proposal

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Oh yes, and I do get postcards from our alder and the city about neighborhood meetings, I don't remember getting one about this topic. Basically, I think this was pushed through by non-neighborhood residents.

An initial neighborhood meeting was held on October 11th, 2012 to learn from local residents and property owners about operational problems and experiences using N Sherman Ave.

There was an interesting part title "History of TWLTLs in the City of Madison"

This is not a new concept by a long shot. I agree that there should have been more meetings, but people also need to be proactive if they want their voice to be heard.

The board voted to go along with the city's plans and reconfigure lanes.

After some digging and following the influence trail, I've learned that the genesis for the Sherman Ave. changes was the Northside Planning Council. The traffic lane changes were part of their "model" for the northside that goes back some 8-10 yrs ago. They then sent their neighborhood reps back to each area to drum up support for a "Main Street" type of setup for Sherman Ave. Only problem was, they didn't ask the masses for feedback until the very end. But hey, it's a done deal, so please ride safely and stay in the bike lane so some little old lady doesn't send you to the afterlife with your helmet on!

If some little old lady hits me and it's her fault, she shouldn't be driving.

there was also a proposal that Maple Bluff commissioned a few years back to redo Lakewood Plaza (home to Manna Cafe and Vic Pierce) in to a more 'modern' style shopping center, but I don't know if they just tabled it or what happened. I think it was right before the downturn in 2008, so maybe it lost steam when the money ran out.

yeah I'd much rather be "payin than layin"...but seriously, if you stay in the bike lane, the little old northside ladies are far less likely to hit you. Now, if you wanna go all critical mass on Sherman....

I'd try to get that printed on my hospital gown.

Oh, I plan on doing track stands in the middle of Sherman and Aberg Ave. To hell with those little 'ol ladies.

Perhaps we could convince the Naked Bike Ride folks to head out that way next time.

Well if there is only going to be one lane for traffic, it will probably be going faster than it is now, and btw the link for the alleged notice doesn't work.

I still think that if we could have voted on this, it would have lost.

Tried it again and it works for me. It's a PDF link so that might be the issue for you. It's worth a read. They studies on that road date back to 1994.

That doesn't make any sense. If it's the same amount of traffic, yet it's one lane, that means more congestion, hence slower traffic.

As with most topics discussed 'round here, confirmation bias seems prevalent. It will be interesting to see/hear if some folks' opinions of it change after a year or so with the new layout.

As I live there, I'll let you know.
