Middleton/West Side Beer

Postby nutria » Thu Apr 25, 2013 9:29 pm

OK, everyone, I need a little help. I have someone coming into town next week. He's staying out in Middleton somewhere, and, I quote "I really like trying different IPA's...just incase..." Being a near-eastsider, I'd usually think Malt House, or maybe Alchemy. Anywhere on the west side/Middleton that's comparable? Off the top of my head, I can come up with the Cap Brewery, and the Vintage, on Whitney. Any spots the forons could recommend?

Thanks,
nutria

The Free House has a pretty solid tap list.

Free House Pub in Middleton. It's so good, it's like an east side bar. :P

I'll second the Free House recommendation and if it's busy you can pop across the street for a quick one at the Village Green. I'll add Craftsman as well, though their current tap offerings trend a bit darker and maltier in style. If your friend's an IPA-only kind of hophead (I know a few) then he might be disappointed in only 2-3 taps dedicated to IPAs. They do have O'so Hop Whoopin' on a nitro tap and that's always been good enough for me.

I absolutely love the Vintage but I've also been pleasantly surprised by the tap list at Babe's. It's been a bit since I've been there but there's usually a rotating New Belgium special release tap as well as a Three Floyds offering. I've had Dreadnaught on tap a few times, plus NB's Cocoa Mole.

Take 15 minutes and drive out to the Grumpy troll. If it's IPA they want they need to try some Maggie.

Agree with Fisticuff's reco.....west side (but east of Middleton), Mason Lounge has a strong tap list and has that quirky vibe. Jac's on Monroe St.usually has a nice assortment, as well as good food.

I was gonna recommend the same, but figured that nobody considered Park Street the west side anymore.

It's certainly not "Middleton"-west, but it's west nonetheless.

It's a chain obviously, but actually the Pizzaria Uno on the west side has a solid set of taps as well, w/ a fairly different selection than most other places. I'd recommend maybe starting there for happy hour than branching out to some place that's a better room vibe.

These other spots are also very good recommendations. Also, the beer selection is crap but your friend probably should experience Le Tigre Lounge.

I second the Free House, though it's always hard to get a seat at the bar. Also to consider:

Crafstman Table http://www.craftsmantableandtap.com/

I'd also recommend a visit to Capitol Brewery, even though they are hop-heavy. They'll have Mutiny and it's just a great place if the weather is good. Sprecher's also has a nice patio area if he wants food, too. I get that it's not anything amazing, though.

You could do a whole helluva lot worse than sit on the porch at the Riley Tavern for an afternoon.
