The real problem is that there is a higher level of scrutiny to attain. Why aren't all groups assessed at the absolute highest level of scrutiny?

Because the emphasis has been on service workers and their tip reporting. Only so many IRS auditors to go around.

Would the Tea Party groups get special attention if they weren't so vociferously vocal about their anti-government sentiments?

That was under Bush, right? The IRS targeted service workers for their tips? And not only that, but particular service workers -- service workers who had contributed to MoveOn.org, Act Blue, Pride PAC, Sierra Club, AFSCME...

The IRS is famously and pathetically underfunded.

As far as I'm aware it's under every administration, because it's easier to take it from the little people than the big (corporate) people.

Nice try though.

No, of course not.
Because the whole idea of the Bill of Rights was to make clear that the People have limited rights against a federal government endowed by its Creator with certain unalienable and unlimited powers. How dare a citizen use his privilege of free speech to be so vociferously vocal in criticizing the goodness of the legitimately all-powerful government?

Apparently it wasn't just the TP's the IRS took special interest in:
The IRS also applied extra scrutiny to applicants with statements that "criticize how the country is run" or that sought to educate the public on how to "make America a better place to live" -- designations that would have included conservative political groups looking to apply for 501(c)(4) status

I'm guessing those two criteria could also be applied to many non-conservative organizations as well, so it would be interesting to see if any non-profit left leaning or moderate groups faced extra scrutiny. If they did, it's about time some of them started speaking up.

Since it's becoming fairly evident that more than just the workers involved in the process knew about the extra scrutiny since 2011, there is no way this goes away without congressional investigation. Reid would be smart to have the Senate jump on it first.

Criticizing the government is one thing; threatening it is another. The Tea Party is a threat, not a critic.

Yeah, because here it is almost noon on Monday after this came out and, so far, not a word from the Chief Executive - the guy who swore an oath that he would "faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of his Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

You're threatened by Grover Norquist's quips? Can't you just get a virtual restraining order? Or even cheaper -- a sense of humor?

To avoid all the scrutiny plus protect themselves fom taxes, the Tea Party should have created a foreign subsidiary to divert their income into just like Microsoft, Apple, Honeywell etc..

I see: when the spiritual leader of the Tea Party says something, we should all laugh. When a Democrat says something we have to have a Congressional hearing. Got it.
