Half Sour Pickles?

Postby Violet_Skye » Tue May 21, 2013 10:08 pm

I have a friend on a very restricted diet and one of the things he is allowed is pickles. He loves these half sour dills, but I've never heard of them or seen them. He said HyVee used to carry them but stopped. Does anyone have any tips on locating these in Madison? Much appreciated, if so. I'd like to surprise him with a few jars on his birthday this Sunday.

Not sure what you mean by half sour.

I buy sweet candied dill pickles at Woodmans, buthere is little if any sour, just a sweet dill taste.

This is the exact jar right on Amazon, but has to be a misprint. They sell for $3-$4 at Woodmans. I think they got the decimal off one place to the right.

There is such a thing as half sour pickles and I dimly remember seeing that on a label on a bottle, somewhere. I'd try the coops and Trader Joe's and then if that panned out, Whole Paycheck.

https://www.google.com/search?q=claussen+half+sour+dills&client=firefox-a&hs=FF1&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=XDycUeG0C4ya8wTk2YC4Bw&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1051&bih=635 See images...they actually do exist. I contacted Kraft to see if they carry the Claussen ones around here, but got no response. Any brand will do but they have to say 'half sour'.

Sorry for the giant url...I don't know how to shrink it.

Looks like they are common knowledge out east - land of the proper deli. This makes me think Ella's might have them? Or a specialty grocery in Milwaukee?

If all else fails, these guys ship nationwide:

Check with Stalzy's. They do a lot of classic East Coast deli flourishes, so perhaps they'd have a line on half-sours.

Make your own?

Even if the pickles weren't as good it might make a better gift.

The recipe looks good, but it's a several day process (natural fermentation, not vinegar) and I'm not sure if pickling cucumbers are available right now. Good plan for later in the summer, definitely.

Calling Walmart was a 20 minute ordeal to find out they don't have them. Not that I am sure they really checked. Ugh!

Going to try Stalzy's after the lunch rush.

...nope, none at Stalzy's either.

Metcalfs in Hilldale has them. But I warn you, the brand they carry doesn't impress me. In my experience half sours need to be somewhat fresh.

It stuns me that people out here in the great midwest don't know half sours. I ask the pickle guys at the farmers' market all the time and get blank stares.

Fantastic. Thanks! I will grab some of those for now, and make them fresh later on. :D

They actually had two brands, one a kosher brand with a Hebrew name, and the other one was Nathan's. I got the Nathan's. Which kind did you not care for? Just curious.
