The easiest thing to be in the world is you. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want you to be. Don't let them put you in that position.”

Ah yes, Einstein was talking about his discomfort with the emergence of quantum theory.
The thing is - things worked out "swimmingly" with the dicey nature of the quantum as we have applied the statistical vice.
Look around you, for better or worse, this is what really drove us here and still drives us forward.

Reflecting on the work, of these two dudes, stirs up an interesting narrative that I haven't gotten my head around yet:

Thanks for the links, MH! An interesting read this am.

I esp. liked Claude Shannon, his interest in games, and also his view of using whitespace as the 27th letter of the alphabet. Typography has always been a special interest of mine. I used to dabble in calligraphy as a youngster.

Query, Mad Howler:

Why Blackjack? IMHO, too much chance, not enough kismet.

Def. not chuck-a-luck!

Scraped from a link above
Shannon and his wife Betty also used to go on weekends to Las Vegas with M.I.T. mathematician Ed Thorp, and made very successful forays in blackjack using game theory type methods co-developed with fellow Bell Labs associate, physicist John L. Kelly Jr. based on principles of information theory.

I agree with you about the lack of "kismet",
But this is our present trajectory.
This took some time to get here.
Once we get our heads around what has happened,
Perhaps we will be ready to effect its course.

Like I said, I am still trying to get my head around...

I bit you and all peace, and a reflective Memorial Day.

Best,

If . . .

by

Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a man, my son!

Thank you APF for the above.

Let me return the favor from "South Pacific".
It is too bad that they were right.
And let me be clear that I am not being depressing here,
I am trying to get my head around nearly a century of subterfuge that has disrupted our collective goodness...

"Hammerstein and Rodgers:

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!"

Common sense is nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down by the mind before you reach eighteen."

Attributed to Albert Einstein, Mathematics, Queen and Servant of the Sciences (1952) by Eric Temple Bell

Turn common sense into uncommon sense."
