Who should the Dems run against Walker?

Postby Henry Vilas » Mon Jun 17, 2013 1:01 pm

Assuming Scott Walker runs for reelection in 2014, who should the Democratic nomination be? Paul Fanlund of the Cap Times thinks a current politician wouldn't have a chance, since the talking points will again be Act 10, labor unions and public employee rights.

So is there a liberal business person with enough statewide recognition to have a chance? The only one I can think of (and I don't know if she would even consider running) would be Epic's Judith Faulkner.

Mary Burke is a more likely candidate.

And it would be fun to see MTI out campaigning for her....

Good read. I think Fanlund is probably right.

Unfortunatly I also think there's a snowball's chance in hell of the Democratic party taking that route.

I don't think Faulkner has the name recognition statewide at this point. That's not an overwhelming handicap. Ron Johnson managed to overcome that handicap, but Johnson had the benefit of a massive conservative drive in 2010. I wouldn't put any money on a progressive surge of comparable force coming in 2014.

It seems like Fanlund is almost longing for Herb Kohl circa 1988.

And yet he starts out by mentioning Tammy, who I think most people didn't think stood a chance.

Other than "not Tom Barrett", at this point I'd say it's totally a crapshoot.

Deb Carey, President of New Glarius brewing company would be another option. Beer money runs deep in the state.

And think about the Victory Party!

I like the idea of either Burke or Carey. And a woman running would make the race an interesting one, especially considering Walker's anti-woman agenda.

Fanlund actually may be wanting to enlist Herb Kohl. Although not nearly as interesting, he could campaign as the elder statesman and Walker would just come across as mean.

I don't think Kohl is interested in running. It's too bad, because only someone like that would stand a chance. I'm sticking with my prediction. The answer to this question is: it doesn't matter. Walker is going to be reelected.

Come on!
That is not happening.
It pains me to ask this, but it seems an obvious question, why is the democratic party such a mess in our state?
And as long as I am asking why are both parties of our duopoly so paralyzed?
We need to figure out how to make all of our voices matter.
It is sad that we have been taught away from this simple notion.

I don't think we should be looking to our emeritus pols.

Tammy Baldwin made Thompson look really, really old.

Walker, for all his deficiencies, can still make people look old.

It's 2013. Many younger voters barely remember the past generation of elected officials. We need to move on.

Deb Carey would be a fun candidate but it is too risky for her. Spotted Cow dominates in this state, even the worst dive bars have it on tap. Why risk getting half of the state pissed off against your beer? New Glarus has all its eggs in the Wisconsin basket, it needs bipartisan support to keep that giant brewery/castle running.

When have the republicans been paralyzed recently, exactly???? They seem to have no problem overturning rocks and finding extreme candidates to run. On the other side, the dems can't find anyone to beat back even the most extremist creeps (Andre Jacque, etc.).

I just got a fundraising email from Barrett that had a "Barrett for Governor" link at the bottom.
