deep in the heart of texas

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

deep in the heart of texas

Postby DCB » Wed Jun 26, 2013 12:03 am

I checked into the live stream to catch State Sen. Davis's filibuster. Instead I got some crazy parlimentary shit. It sounded like there was a debate on an appeal to a point of order regarding "germaness".

Somewhere past the 10-hour mark, Sen. Davis, mentioned a previous sonogram bill, which the the anti-choice crowd claimed wasn't 'germane' to the current abortion restiction bill. Which apparently would shut down the filibuster.

Now its just a lot crazy yelling. I don't know what's going on.

From what I just read, you seem to have summed up what was going on quite well.

In any case they had till midnight to pass the bill, and between the filibuster, the parlimentary procedure issues, and the crazy yelling, the billed was killed for now. Though Governor Perry's office has indicated they might call another special session to try and push it through again.

Oh, so it's a transvaginal ultrasound bill?

What I found fascinating was that the gallery of the Texas Senate was filled with people who were making quite the fuss..as opposed to Madison, where the police intimidation in the gallery prevents that type of stuff.

Another difference: the bill failed because BY LAW legislatin' has to end AT MIDNIGHT.
Are you listening, WI Legislature?

The filibuster is a real endurance test: no leaning on the desk! no sipping water! Are you listening, Harry Reid?

Between Gov. Ooops and Sen. "Rape kits=Abortion", some of us are probably inclined to ignore Texas as just a backwater of regressive troglodytes. As a counterpoint, see the above.

See also: Wendy Davis.

Don't write off Texas.

Texas may have a law about a legislative curfew, but the bill died because the special session called by Perry ended at midnight.

Wendy Davis and her allies made great use of social media:

The whole thing would have been ignored if not for Twitter.

The best part was the Texas GOP putting fake time stamps on the proceedings. What tools- they got busted on that quickly! I guess they don't know about the internet;)

I think the great thing about this is that many young women around the country were glued to the live feed, and very emotionally involved. It was an educational experience for them, maybe a radicalizing one. When the Republicans put on their daddy act, they drive young women under 30 right into the Democratic Party. It's really stupid politics on the part of the GOP. Most young women I know abhor abortion for themselves, but completely resent these pompous old men and grandstanding church ladies disrespecting their right to make decisions for themselves.

It appears Gov. Oops and his clown posse is going to put on another anti-women show. It's clear we are witnessing the death throes of the Republican Party.

Could we possibly extend a peace offering to the Russian government if they allowed Pussy Riot to perform in the Texas Capitol building during the session?

You said it more than once so I wondered if perhaps the speaker was saying it wrong or something. Or you couldn't understand his outrageous french accent.

Why? I don't get this narrative. If it is just an outpatient birth control procedure, then why abhor it?

I don't think it's the mechanics of the procedure they're abhorring. You have to sit there and think about it as a potential parent to be in the right frame of mind.
