Where are my hummingbirds?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

Where are my hummingbirds?

Postby Henry Vilas » Thu Jun 13, 2013 4:21 pm

I've been setting out a hummingbird feeder for quite a few years, but this year not a one has showed up. I am careful about cleaning the feeder and I change the sugar water solution regularly, but no luck. I have other bird feeders and they are frequently visited. Have any city dwellers out there seen Ruby-throated Hummingbirds this year?

I've had some blue jays now and then. And too many redwing blackbirds.

I suspect your hummingbirds are where my fireflies are. This is as late in June that I've gone without seeing any. I think (and hope) it's just an artifact of the cold, wet, spring and we'll be seeing them all shortly.

I've seen a few jays around, just this week.

Not a city dweller but we have a couple of hummers this year. They're still feeding daily. More like ten or twelve summered at our house last year. Numbers are down this year because of the really dry summer last year. That decimated the flying insect population. According to a bird man much more knowledgeable than me- No bugs to eat, equals no hummers for Henry's Thanksgiving Day feast.

I have eaten
the hummingbirds
that were at
your feeder

and which
you were probably
hoping to watch
at breakfast

forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so bold

I saw two hummingbirds in our back yard, but it's been several weeks ago now.

There's a couple blue jays that have been terrorizing other birds in our yard for the last couple weeks.

Bluejays -- those fat fuckers are the reason I quit feeding birds around here. My wife talked me out of popping them with my Red-Rider a few times.

My Parents up north have an awesome group of hummingbirds this year and orioles, holy crap so many Orioles -- my mom is going through an orange a day and a jar of grape jelly a week feeding those little guys.

Just saw an incredibly tiny bird dart up and land on a branch. Until 5:30 this morning I thought hummingbirds spent their lives hovering in flight.

Last year we had a hummingbird nest in the tree in front of our house- about 20 feet off the ground. Until then I thought they were bush nesters. The tree came down last fall & I thought that was why we weren't seeing any, but my brother, 20 miles away, hasn't had his usual turnout either. We're seeing a lot more small birds though; in addition to the usual sparrows and red finches there are gold finches and some tiny grey ones I don't know.

We had fireflies finally on Monday night, so better late than never. Maybe again tonight, if it doesn't rain. We live outside the city, too.
