End Concerts on the Square now!

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

End Concerts on the Square now!

Postby Westsidegal » Thu Jul 04, 2013 10:36 pm

The trees that ring our state Capitol building are historic. We are potentially doing great damage to them with the weekly Concerts on the Square. If there is any chance that damage is being done then we should make sure we are first doing no harm.

The same goes with Dane County Farmers Market which also has tens of thousands trampling these historic trees. Why does it have to be on the Capitol anyways? It could be anywhere in Dane County!

The Allient Energy Center parking lot would be a much more appropriate location for the Dane County Farmers Market.

Potential damage is being done to these trees so vendors at the farmers market can make money. That is not right!

Thank you Lorax, but the trees will be fine. Or they won't.

How is it possible to trample on a tree big enough to be called "historic"?

The roots are being harmed due to soil compaction.

The trees on the square are some of the most pampered in the state. You don't think they aerate whenever needed? On most days of the year the lawns on the square are basically empty.

You must have really been freaking out during the Act 10 protests.

These are old grow trees and we should do everything we can to make sure they are not being harmed. Having their roots trampled twice a week because of Concerts on the Square and the Farmers Market is not acceptable. Those two events could easily be moved elsewhere.

It is shocking that some Madisonians are so cavalier about these old trees well being.

Why do some in Madison have a love affair with these large, over crowded, loud events? They are disruptive and are potentially doing damage to our urban natural environment. I am glad to see that Rhythm and Booms is coming to an end and there is a move afoot to scale down some of the cities festivals that occur in city parks and streets. I do not attend the Willy Street Fair because I can not bear to see the damage being done to the street trees there.

There should be a requirement that any event that draws more than three thousand people to city outdoor space must have an environmental impact statement done by a qualified professional including an arborist.

You really need to relax, although I'm finding your rant quite entertaining. Trees are not a finite resource, they literally grow on, well, trees.

I cannot help but feel that there is an as-yet-unnamed project somewhere, languishing because of legal complications arising from frivolous use of regulations protecting some useless animal or plant, brought by vain self-righteous tree huggers more intent on causing damage to job creators than on saving innocent livestock.

Oh, no wait. I bet it's R&B. That's it, isn't it? Those damn duck lovers done screwed up the fourth of July partay. No beers no bands, no weekend.

Ducks have as much of a right to Warner Park as you do. I would say more of a right.

There are venues all over town where you can listen to bands, drink yourself silly and party. Why does it have to trample our glorious public spaces like the Capitol Square?

Lisa: Uh, well, I was thinking of going vegan.

Jesse: I’m a level 5 vegan — I won’t eat anything that casts a shadow.

Lisa: Wow. Um … I started an organic compost pile at home.

Jesse: Only at home? You mean you don’t pocket-mulch? [takes out pocket mulch for Lisa to feel]
