If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

McD's can't figure out how employees survive on Min. wage

In a financial planning guide for its workers, the company accidentally illustrates precisely how impossible it is to scrape by on a fast food paycheck.

They appear to be using expense numbers from 1980 or so.

Numbers speak louder than words. Much louder.

This budget was exactly what I was trying to get Ned to "do the numbers" on in another thread (fully realizing he wasn't gonna do it). Nobody can make ends meet on these jobs and pay for health care for crying out loud. The article is right: we're subsidizing these companies.

To claim we're subsidizing their hapless employees purposely misses an essential part of the chain of causality.

No kidding. These people are so downtrodden they need pictures on the cash registers so they know which buttons to push. Sheesh.

These companies ARE being subsidized by taxpayers.

Right, in other words, much of the food stamp/heat/rental/etal assistance paid out today is in fact corporate welfare replacing a fair wage...

I read part of the 2013 "farm bill". It's essentially a huge handout to the burger joints and food stamps, which will be spent at the burger joints.

Are you saying you'd have a hard time finding a way to spend $800 on food, gas, clothing, entertainment, and the portion of your health insurance that is over $20? Well, I guess you could throw a dependent or two in there, that should take care of it.

Of course, since you're working 80 hours per week, who has time to eat or have fun?

Whaddaya mean? It's Mcdee's. There's food all over the place. Just grab, eat, and run.

And if you have to run while you eat, just get yerself one of these.

The boss wouldn't have a problem with you using the competitor's product as long as it's improving your efficiency.

I'm saying that while all the other numbers

the amount of spending money available seems pretty high, given that I make significantly more then the hypothetical employee and would have a hard time coming up with half that much in spending cash/food/gas money after all bills were paid.

Almost as if the person writing it was trying to play down the cost of bills and sell all the spending money.

Ok, I see what you're saying. Interesting point about selling all that spending money, like they're trying to show that you'll be rolling in dough working at McDeez.

(oh... never mind that 2nd job that's actually providing you with every cent of that spending money plus that car payment).

As stated in Tennessee the other day the problem could be solved by "providing additional government subsidies and corporate tax breaks, 35% to 28%", and the good jobs will trickle down.
