U.S. kinetic strike against Syria?

Postby Henry Vilas » Thu Jul 18, 2013 2:41 pm

A top U.S. military officer seems to be advocating direct military action against the Syrian regime. He mentions a "kinetic strike." The exact definition of that euphemism is left up to the reader.

Yes, I saw the Wiki article too. Pretty vague. Military euphemisms are noted for that.

With Obama, my first guess would be drone strikes.

Which would be awesome, since most of my fb friends who think we need to do more in Syria, are also strongly against the use of drones.

Which brings up another military euphemism: collateral damage. Maybe even friendly fire (if we can tell which rebel group we could consider friends).

CBS news just reported the 82nd Airborne is getting ready. Sabre rattling or the real thing?

a hyperkinetic strike is one that goes pear-shaped in the execution coz people cannot pay attention. . .

in any case, i am guessing that they have not taken active measures to make al-assad & co un-arse the president's chair in damascus because president obama et al are in receipt of information that the opposition is equalling or exceeding the government & friends in their use of chemical weapons, killing prisoners of war, herding people into houses of worship and setting them ablaze, et hoc genus omne . . . so much for the red line . . .

So why would we want to unseat Assad? I know he is a pretty major world class bad guy and have no love for him

But if we unseat him, who replaces him?

The replacements look even worse. Many of them look Al-Queada linked. This would be better?

Were you folks here in favor of intervention in Iraq? If not, how is this different? Why beat the drums for Syrian action? If we had no interest in Iraq, we have even less interest in Syria.

I have to agree with you JH. I'm getting tired of us being the world police. We seem to find some anecdotal reason to attack because we are threatened, but I don't see any action from Syria affecting us. The Humanitarian issues suck, but they suck all over the world. We have bigger issues right in the good 'ol USofA to deal with.

At this point, there are no good candidates.
Fear of the alternatives is always, always always what keeps tyrants in power. First step, you have to develop a credible alternative, they don't spring-up out of dust in totalitarian states.

not me.

in fact, i think the proof is in the pudding when it comes to egypt and libya too -- a pretty good case for the united states to think it through more completely when slinging their arse around.

one of the possible outcomes in syria would be a new government just deciding to kill all of the christians, shia, druze, alawaites, maybe even kurds and circassians too depending on who is making the list . . . so do they want to buy those folks enough time to get their shit together so they can pull that off in hours or days? obama probably doesn't, and mc cain is just senile.

I think we are all asleep at the switch.

Syria is settling into a state where half of the country is governed by Al Qaeda, and Al Qaeda is also growing in strength in Western Iraq.

You folks who think the U.S. doesn't have a stake in what is going on in Syria, that it is just one set of bad guys killing another set of bad guys, are going to wake-up to a real shock some day.
