City IT on Access: City Hall

Postby Stu Levitan » Fri Jul 19, 2013 7:23 pm

We'll be talking Information Technology with Mayor Soglin and Paul Kronberger, Chief Information Officer, on Access: City Hall this week. If you've got questions, I'll try to get answers. Thanks.

1. What impact would something like Google Fiber have on Madison/Dane County?
2. Thoughts on Snowden. (Up to you in terms of direction of follow up.)
3. How could we get "about four more Epics"?
4. What tech investments could be made that would attract and please citizens?
5. Same as above, but for tourists.
6. Same as above, but for business.
7. I see videos of a young Mr. Soglin from time to time. What is his current opinion of his then self?

I, as mentioned elsewhere, don't have cable. Is the show available online?

In light of the Heimsness case and now at the DOJ revelations that Dan Bethards sent similar messages disparaging his colleagues...

Exactly what is the IT capability for finding this stuff? Is there voice recognition for phone calls and other voice communications? How about emails? Who has the authority to monitor them? Is it ever proactive, or only done in hindsight?

Is there any technology available to help Officers remember they forgot their shotgun in the car?

Some good questions, thanks.

John, here's the link to the citychannel portal. You'll find info on watching on-line.

The entire city website and all web services were down for an extended period (3-4 days?) a couple of months ago. It would be interesting to know a) what caused it and b) why they didn't have any redundancy in place.

Does the City have a policy and a strategy for exposing commonly-owned data to the world?

For example, the Metro has oodles of real-time bus location/departure/arrival information. Some of this they feed into City apps, such as webwatch.cityofmadison.com and apps available via Google.

But is there a plan to make real-time data available to the public? The implications of this kind of openness go well beyond applications that offer efficiency and convenience. It's also a rich resource for analysis and planning that may take place within or outside of the conventional (government and academic) venues.

It also means (analogous to open-access publishing) that the feedback loop will be greatly shortened for information produced the the public's expense.

More in terms of APIs than static data sets. Dynamcially exposing real-time data for consumption by external applications, for example.

Why, gosh. I dunno. Maybe ...
"real-time bus location/departure/arrival information"
for example ...
information exposed via an API that's open to the world.

If that doesn't make sense, the IT director can fill in the gaps. These are concepts that originated in the IT world but are well within common sphere of discourse, these days.

You mean this? http://api.smsmybus.com/

I completely agree with you, BTW.

Is there a dataset or API you're looking for in particular?

Click on one of the data sets. Click on Export, then API.

The city's own real-time bus arrival data and several third-party apps that use it in more or less graphic form work just fine and you see people using them at the bus stops all day.

http://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/apps/

This particular data set is easy to access and use and lots of people know about it. Maybe the leading question should be about what other data sets are similarly available but less well known.

This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. But why isn't the City providing this?
