Sandyhook community buys back First Person Shooters

Town near Sandy Hook launches $25 violent video game buy-back http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/03/town- ... -buy-back/

Raven and Humanhead produce First-Person-Shooter Simulations (FPSS) here in Madison that people near Sandyhook Elementary School will give you money just to take it out of circulation. Other than guns, what other product have you heard of that people buy back to keep the destruction off the streets? Aren't we proud of our community and what we produce? We should make more, and then sell them all back to Newtown for more profit. Isn't that what counts regardless of the blood?

Tell Raven and Humanhead that we don't want their companies here. Tell them to move to Newtown, Connecticut. They can run their companies from an empty school building, which can be rented cheaply. Sound like a sick joke? It's not a joke. It's as deadly as cancer. It would not be acceptable for these men and their companies to be located in city of Newtown, the State of Connecticut, or even the entire country of Norway.

So how could it be acceptable to have these men and their companies here in Madison, Wisconsin?

Me, I’d rather get rid of the rich, the voter suppression movement, and slasher films. This anti video game screed reads too much like …burn the evil – book - person - other object of my obsession, pick one… You can burn all the video games in the world and you’re not going to change much except the level of censorship we allow.
The fact that some disturbed people play violent video games isn’t that compelling- some of them read Sun Tzu and Machiavelli too.

In order to make sense of this person's argument, you'd have to show

1) game playing (or music, or whatever) is a cause of murders and violence, not just associated with it to some extent; and

2) banishing the games would actually reduce the incidence of murders and violence.

We're waiting.

And no, I am not a gamer and I dislike violence-for-entertainment. But you've got to make sense, not just be passionate about some notion in your head.

I demand that the Catholic church immediately begin buying back Bibles. That thing has encouraged far more murders than COD. The other churches may as well get with the program too, but I expect leadership from the oldest group peddling that dangerous material.

I'm all in favor of banning all violent videogames, just because I'm an old fogey and don't like them. But I don't expect that argument to carry much weight.

Hell, at least the facts you are basing your opinion on are actually true unlike the OP's arguement.

“There is ample evidence that violent video games, along with violent media of all kinds, including TV and Movies portraying story after story showing a continuous stream of violence and killing, has contributed to increasing aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and is desensitizing our children to acts of violence including bullying,”

I for one think we should ban all violence everywhere in media and entertainment. No more on TV, in the news, in the newspaper, magazines, on the internet...

As a matter of fact, don't let your kid out and make sure they only watch Little House on the Prairie.

What about all the violence that occurred before there was TV and the interwebs.

What's with online petitions anyway? They ring hollow and do little more than increase confirmation bias of the in-group they target.

Don't play video games and shoot fake people in the video games K? That makes more bad! Science proves it!

This is unbelievable considering you enjoy adversarial and combative politics. Or is that just your online handle?

I think this effort is misguided. That said, given the country's lack of action with response to the easy availability of guns, I don't blame people for trying to do SOMETHING.

There is a horror story nearly every week. But guns have nothing to do with it. Violent games have nothing to do with it. Violent media have nothing to do with it.

Right. We just have to live with it, and nothing can be done. Rather than mock people who are trying to do something, what do you suggest?

What if it was your kid who didn't make it safely to your arms? Because a lot of people's kids don't.

Robert Dole in the 1996 elections said that he didn't think cigarettes are addictive. The Cigarette Industry was able to testify before Congress up until the 1990's that they didn't think cigarettes caused cancer. Proving direct causation is very difficult.

But we are not claiming direct causation. We are simply saying that this is a factor in hostile behavior. The trend of the data is becoming clear. On our facebook page we list three studies published within the past year, from Indiana, Iowa State and Ohio State University showing how FPSS affect people's minds.

This product is much worse than pornography. Perhaps worse than heroin. It doesn't matter, we don't want either produced in Wisconsin. These companies couldn't open up shop in Newtown, CT. They couldn't operate in the entire country of Norway.

So why do we in Wisconsin have lower standards than these places.
