Another theory on why air temperatures haven't been rising much in the last fifteen years or so: the oceans have been absorbing it.
Kevin Trenberth at the National Center for Atmospheric Research wrote the paper back in 1988 saying that heat wave was due to El Nino, not global warming. He doesn't have a history of following the crowd.

Trenberth still sees changes in ocean temperature as key to understanding the ups and downs of global climate. That includes the current plateau in global temperature.

Trenberth says, in fact, the planet has continued to warm during this time — but the heat has been flowing into the oceans, which have a vast capacity to absorb it.

So will the oceans come to our rescue?

"That's a good question, and the answer is maybe partly yes, but maybe partly no," he says.

The oceans can at times soak up a lot of heat. Some goes into the deep oceans where it can stay for centuries. But heat absorbed closer to the surface can easily flow back into the air. That happened in 1998, which made it one of the hottest years on record.

Trenberth says since then, the ocean has mostly been back in one of its soaking-up modes.

"They probably can't go on much for much longer than maybe 20 years, and what happens at the end of these hiatus periods, is suddenly there's a big jump [in temperature] up to a whole new level and you never go back to that previous level again," he says.

As with most changes, it's not a linear process. Things happen in the background while it's quiet, then all hell breaks loose and it quiets down again, changed.

Yawn.

And we should believe this why?

The data on ocean temperatures, particularly in the 20th century and before but even today, is particularly unreliable.

Besides which, they have such a great track record with all the other predictions, don't they?

An excellent out-of-hand dismissal! It would be too much work to treat it as if it might contain new information.

John, we've been over this. If you're going to post something science-y, you to need to provide some details. Like who published it, and where did they get the data, what assumptions did they make?
Apparently you're just posting something you found from climate-denier Steven Goddard, who also doesn't give any details of his plot.

Details matter. I trust scientists who publish their methods.

Thanks for the link, but you should look at what you post. Had you paid attention, you would see that the data comes from NOAA.

Last I heard, the warminests were on board with NOAA. All Goddard did was show NOAA's own data disproves their claims.

No it doesn't, it shows how many 100 plus readings there have been. It has nothing to prove regarding climate change. Just because there are more or less 100+ readings doesn't have any reflection at all on the average temperature. warming or cooling.

Particularly since those +100 degree days are for the U.S. only. But denialists really don't seem to ever get that "global climate" is not the same thing as "U.S. weather".

It is extremely hot where I am today, so OF COURSE global warming is real.

Heck, they don't even grasp the difference between "climate" and "temperature" most of the time, as evidenced by any number of posts on this thread. But then, I don't really expect accurate use of terms from someone who tosses around non-words like "warmenist".

Actually, no. He truncated the graph (in order to remove pre-1930 data) and added a trend line to demonstrate the alleged decrease. This is the same tactic ol' JH uses when he cites temperature trends using only post-1997 data.

It's convenient, though blatantly sloppy and outright misleading, to intentionally exclude data which does not support your argument. This is what a misinformation campaign looks like.
