51% Favor Shutdown Until Congress Cuts Health Care Funding

Postby Sandi » Thu Sep 19, 2013 4:20 am

Republicans are chided for insisting on cuts for any budget deal. However the voting public agrees with them.

Just 20% of Likely U.S. Voters believe a partial shutdown of the federal government would be good for economy, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifty-six percent (56%) say such a shutdown would be bad for the economy, even though payments for things like Social Security, Medicare and unemployment would continue. Sixteen percent (16%) think it would have no impact. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

But 58% favor a federal budget that cuts spending, while only 16% prefer one that increases spending. Twenty-one percent (21%) support a budget that keeps spending levels about the same.

This helps explain why 53% would rather have a partial government shutdown until Democrats and Republicans can agree on what spending to cut. Thirty-seven percent (37%) would prefer instead that Congress avoid a shutdown by authorizing spending at existing levels as the president has proposed.

Some conservative Republicans in both the House and Senate are refusing to approve a budget unless it slows or stops funding for the health care law, but the president and most congressional Democrats are adamantly opposed to any such cuts. However, 51% of voters favor having a partial government shutdown until Democrats and Republicans agree on what spending for the health care law to cut. Forty percent (40%) would rather avoid a government shutdown by authorizing spending for the health care law at existing levels.

This comes as no surprise. The Affordable Healthcare Act is costing jobs in record proportions, not to mention raising healthcare costs, while, in many cases, lowering standards of care.

Karl Rove: The GOP's Self-Defeating 'Defunding' Strategy

"There is, however, one issue on which independents disagree with Republicans: using the threat of a government shutdown to defund ObamaCare. By 58% to 30% in the GPS poll, they oppose defunding ObamaCare if that risks even a temporary shutdown."

This poll was so horribly written starting with the title itself. They are referring to the last question of the survey:

Some members of Congress refuse to approve a budget unless it slows or stops funding for the new health care law. Would you rather have Congress avoid a government shutdown by authorizing spending for the health care law at existing levels or would you rather have a partial government shutdown until Democrats and Republicans agree on what spending for that law to cut?

The question implies partial cuts to the funding. The title suggest the funding be cut completely. If that's not bad enough, the question itself is loaded and misleading. They are implying that congress is "negotiating" on spending cuts. BULLSHIT. Republicans want to outright defund the ACA. Someone hearing this question may very well think, "if they can't compromise, then we should have a government shutdown"

Also, they give no hard data on this survey. You have to be a "platinum member" to see individual question results. I for one would like to know the numbers on this question:

How closely have you followed recent news reports about the federal budget debate in Congress?

All of this aside, what do these numbers show? It shows half of this country isn't sold on the ACA. Surprise, surprise. That proves nothing. Also, the margin of error is +/- 3%. With that, the numbers could swing the other way and a majority of Americans don't want cuts.

Links please. Please don't tell me to Google it because you made the argument, now defend it instead of regurgitating talking points.

If Republicans believed this, they would sit back and gleefully watch the whole thing implode.

Truth is that the ACA hasn't cost a single job (the government is not responsible for the decisions of immoral business owners), health care costs have gone down, many more people have health coverage and the standard of care has not been affected one bit.

That "standard of care" bit is hysterical, btw. Anyone pushing that forward simply has no idea how health care businesses function.

That was my favorite talking point. How is standard of care going down when the health care providers are still getting the same amount of money?

If its a Rasmussen poll, you can be 110% sure that it is completely wrong.

I say let republicans lie to themselves all they want about polls. It didn't really help them in 2012. If that's what it takes for them to keep marginalizing themselves I'm more than happy to give them enough rope.

That's not hard to figure out.

Because unlike oil, which is infinite and should never be conserved, health care is a finite resource. Poor people be usin' up all the health care.

Yes, absolutely correct. And as this poll indicates most likely voters agree and want to defund it as well.

Nice that we agree on something.

I'm tempted to agree. But the Compromiser-in-Chief has sometimes acted as if 'negotiating in good faith' was possible, as if they weren't completely divorced from reality.
Happily, this time he seems be drawing a red line with Republicans.

We all agree the poll was misleading and doesn't support the stated conclusions.

Ned, is that you? I'm surprised you'd pick a woman's name as your sock puppet, given your hatred of all things vagina.
