Helmets Save Lives.

Postby canoelover » Fri Sep 20, 2013 8:07 am

As a cycling dork, I was wearing one of those gawd-awful fugly Bell helmets back in 1978. It replaced one of those glorified leather hairnets that cyclists used, mostly to hold your head together to see who you were before you hit the pothole and went ass-over-teakettle into the back of a garbage truck.

Then helmets became cooler, lighter, and less dorky. Not wearing a helmet seemed like not wearing a seatbelt.

Then, about four or five years ago, I went to Boulder. I saw almost no one wearing helmets (except road riders on fast bikes heading out of town). Hipsters on their fixies and less-hip college kids on their cruisers zoomed around town with nothing between them and their mortality.

I hope we don't go there...

How many helmets do they wear in Europe, the Netherlands, and other countries where there are more bicycles than cars?

My guess is no one wears more than one.

Mine is that one in a thousand wears one.

I think there is more respect and awareness of bikes in Europe than there is here in 'Merica.

When I was in London, everyone I saw wore a helmet.

Pedestrians need helmets too.

Especially drunk ones.

I'd also want to know how many head injuries they suffer.

Let people wear helmets if they want to or not. Doesn't effect me or my life.

Almost no one wears a helmet in the Benelux, unless they're cycling for sport (racing or mountain biking).

Can't really compare it to riding here, though—their cycling infrastructure is leaps and bounds ahead of ours (especially in NL), and people grow up riding bikes for transport from a very young age. And cyclists obey the rules of the road. I found that awkward at first, but by the end of my first summer there it felt natural to wait at an intersection for the light to turn even with no sign of traffic in any direction. So natural, in fact, that I brought the habit back home with me. It's a much more relaxing way to ride.

I did not read all of the article. It felt like a lecture and made me not want to read further. Someone was riding a bike, had a freak accident and is dead. If you do not wear a helmet, you will die too.

I think there should be a helmet law: you don't have to wear a helmet, but if you choose not to, then you must be an organ donor. Lord knows we need more available organs.

Same here.

I knew someone who drowned in a boating accident when she fell overboard and got hit by the propeller. Therefore nobody should go out in a boat.

People get head injuries in car wrecks every day. We should all wear helmets to drive, like in NASCAR.

Lecturing and scare tactics do little to change people's behavior. In some cases, they drive people the opposite direction.

Bike safety will improve more with better bike infrastructure. The more we talk about how that could work, the better the ideas we'll generate.
