Coach Andersen's Toyota ads

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Coach Andersen's Toyota ads

Postby Broadsheet » Sat Sep 28, 2013 1:56 pm

Is anyone else embarrassed by Coach Gary Andersen's ads for Toyota? They make him look like a fool, clapping and whooping and doing the "wave" as customers walk in. Even the "customers" look at him stupefied, like he's a crazy man.

He's a dignified man. Toyota should pull those ads and reshoot them in a way that shows some respect. I know he's not in Utah anymore, but he should demand better for himself -- setting aside the whole question of whether he, Bo Ryan, and others should appear in car commercials.

The Anderse nads are too corny and not goofball enough.
Next time have him juggle stuff. Can't juggle? Even better.
Why can't he juggle?

They make me cringe. If that's what they're going for, great job!

They still aren't as bad as Jordy Nelson's Wisconsin State Tourism ads.

Or that first dumbass commercial Zucker directed with Robert Hays in the lake.
I'm not exactly sure what that was advertising. That fisherman are dumb? That boats go fast? That boobs make you smile?

Either way, didn't really do much for me or make me want to be 'touristy'.

They're pretty bad ... but not "Badgers' running game" bad.

I was unaware that this was open to debate.

I looked but still have no idea who Coach Andersen is. Doesn't help that the Badgers have a coach with that name too. All of the commercials are weird. I don't want to ever buy a Toyota. I don't like that he wears a visor indoors. You're not my real father. The radio spot where he says he doesn't want to make it weird, is weird.

No kidding. If you have to say it, it's already too late....

What's the question there?

OK, I'll pretend you don't know. The question is whether coaches on college faculties working with teams of unpaid student athletes should be endorsing commercial products for pay.

It violates the spirit of amateur sport, which admittedly is getting less and less amateur. But it also undermines the character of the coach, who is supposed to be a leader and teacher of students, to go on TV as a silly huckster. It cheapens the reputation of the university to have its most visible public representative performing circus tricks for Toyota.

I honestly hadn't considered it. More sympathetic to your second point than the first.

Really? You all just sat there and no one told me it IS the new Football coach? He looks like a basketball coach.

Nor do I. From the thread title, I can't tell whether this should be under the Sports Industry category or the Fashion Accessory category.

And where do folks see (local) ads, these days? Youtube?
