Wisconsin Football to face LSU, Alabama

Postby pjbogart » Fri Aug 09, 2013 9:08 am

Huh? Yeah, I remember series against Colorado, Syracuse, and Oregon, but basically Wisconsin has always kept their non-conference schedule decidedly "cakey". Reports are that Wisconsin will play LSU twice at neutral sites, including next year's season opener and a game in 2016 at Lambeau Field. Also on the docket are Virginia Tech and Alabama. Yeah, Alabama.

Of course, scheduling the big boys comes with great opportunity and risk. If you start winning those games you become an elite program and reap all of the benefits that go with that reputation such as better bowls, TV contracts and recruiting. But losses are losses, and while a loss to a top tier program is taken into consideration, it will still affect your bowl eligibility at the end of the year.

UW games vs. LSU will open 2014, 2016 seasons

I forgot that the college football playoffs start next year, so it actually makes sense that Wisconsin would like to start adding tougher games to their schedule. Making those playoffs, currently set at four teams but likely to rise to eight, will be like adding an extra bowl game to your season. The money will be phenomenal and the exposure/recruiting will be huge as well. You don't want to have a great year but get shut out of the playoffs because of a weak schedule.

UW might be underdogs going into the first couple games of these series, but the program will benefit immeasurably from the exposure -- provided it doesn't shit the bed once the game actually starts, and I'm hopeful that the new coaching staff will keep that from happening.

But why play at these "neutral sites?" I haven't seen anyone make the justification for that.

As usual, it comes down to the money. In place of neutral site games, teams would demand a home-and-home series(if you can even get the opposing team to agree to come to your campus), which would result in lost revenue in the year you play on the road.

Accepting some risk is the first step toward scheduling real non-conference opponents. But no school's going to accept all risk and potentially lose a big game on the opponent's home turf. Better to make it seem like a Big Event (rather than the Hedged Bet that it is) and play at Lambeau and Houston or wherever.

I think the big key is that those games are not included in season ticket packages, which probably equates to a bigger payday. I know some LSU fans were complaining about the same thing - they wanted to visit Camp Randall, and wanted a (hopefully) decent team to visit their home stadium as well.

That will be one tough ticket. Expect them to go on the resale market for similar or more than the first Nebraska game ... $200+.

But if you get in it should be a blast!

TIGER BAIT! TIGER BAIT! TIGER BAIT! TIGER BAIT! TIGER BAIT!

Seriously, this is super exciting for me. Since I moved to Madison in August '01, I haven't been to an LSU game since the <shudder> Gerry DiNardo years.

Will UW season ticket holders get first shot for the Lambeau game?

Read the link I posted. UW gets 40,000 tickets. Some of them spoken for for the band/families. What they do with the rest?
