Are you a young professional?

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Are you a young professional?

Postby Huckleby » Tue Dec 03, 2013 10:03 am

Do you consider yourself a peer of the people in this picture?
How old is young?

Why would you want to party with people of a similar age and income?

What is a professional, anyway? Is a housewife professional? Is somebody who runs a cookie cart on the mall a professional?

There are a couple bars in town that magically fill with "young professional-types"; Merchant and One Barrel come to mind. It's legitimately weird being in one of these spots when all the sudden, a bunch of people with meticulously groomed hair and designer glasses show up, buying drinks politely and being relatively polite. One does not see these people anywhere else in Madison and it really feels like they're carted in from some kind of casting call. Maybe they spend the rest of the time at their club 201 house?

Most of them are probably from Epic. I find them harmless, and mildly amusing. Kind of a "aw, aren't they adorable, all self-important and shit" kind of reaction.

Well groomed? Successful? Motivated?
We don't want any of that in our Madison!

Gotta say, I can't see any picture so I don't know for sure but Flanders may have nailed this one.

Or it could be a setting on his browser that blocks nude pictures.

This reminds of Christians who claim they are persecuted by the "mainstream" around Christmas time - not enough recognition of their holiday.

I have not personally witnessed much oppression of people for being too young & rich & attractive in Madison, but maybe I'm not sensitive to the issue.

In Madison it's hard to be a "young professional", especially after the Great Recession.

Epic hires lot of Mormons. I'm thinking this is what happens when young Mormons run wild.

No, I'm a few years from retirement, but I work with "young professionals," and my daughter is in that category, though I just consider her my kid. I like talking to these folks, but not interested in going to their parties.

I have a lot of empathy for this set. I came out of college into a shitty economy, worked shitty jobs, went to grad school, then came out into an even shittier economy, started my own thing, worked another job to make ends meet, and finally attained a middle class lifestyle. (Hey, don't let anyone tell you Reaganomics was good for the economy. Yeah, the coasts boomed for a few years on criminal conduct in the banking sector (sound familiar), but the interior of the country was beginning to hollow out, along with the middle class.)

So, some young professionals are on the few bottom steps of success, and maybe they could donate time and money to classical music groups. Others may want to pay off staggering amounts of student loan debt. I had some, but it wasn't something I couldn't handle, even with a few years of shitty work. So, yeah, surprisingly, I have a lot of empathy for these folks.
