Performance art: Freelance signer takes world stage

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Performance art: Freelance signer takes world stage

Some guy at Mandela services was doing home-made signing for the deaf. He has worked other major events in the past, amazingly.

I think even the deaf should have a sense of humor about this. I love this man, he has some stones.

What is SNL going to do with this?

Does this have something to do with biking? Please pedal your wares elsewhere.

Isn't he more of a freestyle signer?

Thamsanqa Jantjie, the free-spirited fellow, claims that he is a "Champion Signer", but on this gig he was hallucinating and hearing voices.

The problem with this explanation is that he does the same act at other events.

All very well to make fun of this guy, but more important to me is knowing what Darell Issa thinks. For some reason, he hasn't weighed in on this important Democrat Scandal.

Perhaps he has been silenced by the islamofascist underground....

I'm really not making fun of the guy, whether he has a mental illness or not. I genuinely admired his audacity, but now story is growing odder.

I find the idea of a guy making-it-up on a world stage so funny, particularly his hammy gestures. He looks like a baseball third-base coach calling for a bunt.

edit: actually, he was often repeating the sign language for "prawn" and "rocking horse".

I imagine those words are at the very end of the "Signing for Dummies" book.

At first I thought this was pretty funny. Then I heard an interview with the guy on the radio. He described experiencing some kind of mental breakdown on stage, with visions of angels or supernatural beings surrounding him, and suggested that these kinds of breakdowns have happened to him frequently. His vocal affect was a bit ... spooky.

Either the guy is just faking the whole thing, or he's got serious mental illness issues. Either way somebody should have figured that out and kept him far, far away from an auditorium full of international dignitaries.

"I was hallucinating." is going to be the "I got hacked"/"I was admitted for exhaustion" of 2014.

I'm sure everyone knows that now, and the next eulogy for a much loved leader will involve the tackling and shackling of a legitimate signer walking up to the podium.

Ya, I was given pause by this interview as well.

But then some visions started surrounding me too, they came in the form of videos of his past Marcel Marceau performances. I don't think it is too likely that the hallucinations strike him every time he takes the stage. But who knows? Maybe angels are funny that way.

I'm back to the laugh track, the guy is a huckster extraordinaire, and the hallucinations story is just his latest master stroke.

BTW, I think this incident has had a wonderful, educational effect. Lots of people are learning about signing.

I hadn't realized that facial expressions were the essence of signing.
I also didn't know that there are no (few?) international standards, every country has their own language. American signers don't understand South African symbols.
