How About Those 2014 Brewers?

Are you believers yet? The defense has been sucky, but the Crew finds a way to get around the errors with steady pitching and hitting at the right time. If they can win while fielding this badly, when they finally straighten that out they are going to be unbeatable.

It's April. Good one them but I think they need a 20 game lead on St. Lou before I'll buy my playoff tickets.

Yes, it's still way too early in the year to jump to conclusions, but they've won over this skeptic. The bullpen should be a strength all year and the rotation looks better than I thought. Wily Peralta looks ready to make the leap, especially once his strikeout rate rises to the level of his stuff. The lineup has a few holes, and they're probably a little over-aggressive, but the bulk of the order can inflict some serious damage.

The Cardinals don't look quite as unbeatable this year(they shattered the MLB record for hitting with runners in scoring position last year and are clearly due for some regression) and the Reds and Pirates seem to have taken a step back. The race for the wild card doesn't seem to be as daunting. Health will obviously play a huge factor, but they should stay in contention, barring a flood of injuries.

There are some major points in their favor that this isn't a fluke. Look who they have played so far ... the schedule has been tough, and included a lot of road games. Sweeping the World Series champion on their home turf? Really? The defense has been occasionally extremely spotty, and their baserunning has been terrible ... both those things should theoretically get better. And it's not like the offense has been firing on all cylinders all the time yet, either.

However, the month of May still exists. I wouldn't make any bets on anything until we see if they can avoid their traditional May collapse.

I agree. They have been fun to watch, but a lot of baseball to be played.

Last year, during the May collapse, one of my assistants cut out a headline from the sports section of the paper and put it on my door. It is still there.

It reads: "May Still Miserable."

There are two kinds of people in this world. I'm the third. When it comes to the church of baseball, and the Brewers in particular, I'm, as the song goes, a believer. If there's a collapse in May, well, there's resurrection in June or July or August or September. It ain't over till it's over. I heard that once when I made it up from what I remembered of what someone else said.

The fans are happy. Even Scott Walker is dancing at the 0:43 mark:

20-8 in April. Hank the dog is the reason.
