Best Beach within an hour's drive?

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Best Beach within an hour's drive?

Postby devildog » Fri Jun 13, 2014 8:53 am

We're looking to pack up the car and spend the day at a beach with the kids. Most important to us: clean, clear water and no stinky muck on the beach. Any recs?

Not sure the beach will have complete control over it's muck in the water but generally speaking Governor Dodge does a good job. And they have two beaches so if one is lame check the other. Beach is always nice and clean.

Devil's Lake is very clean with great scenery, good hiking and a nice picnic area.

You're out of luck. There is no muck-free swimming around here, although this time of year it won't be bad.

I love swimming in natural water. The only clear water lake I've been in anywhere near here is Lake Geneva. No doubt there are others.

I'd go for the beach in Verona, which was made from a gravel quarry.

I haven't been swimming there for years, but Silver Lake in Portage used to be great: sandy bottom, with no muck or weeds. I spent most of my time there every summer when I was growing up.

Lake Ripley in Cambridge.

Private beach ($2 adults, $1 kids, or $25 for the summer[I think]).

It's a little over an hour away, but Green Lake (to the north and east in Green Lake County) has some very pristine beaches.

Lake Mills used to be a lot cleaner than Madison lakes when we were growing up, not sure if that is still the case today.

Thanks, all, for the recs. We went for Lake Ripley and gave it two big thumbs up! And now we have a bigger list to work off of for the rest of the summer.
