I once overheard someone say that the lakes were renamed some time ago, that they weren't always Mendota et. al. Any truth in that? (Henry Vilas, I'm looking your way...)

I heard once that Monona means "sunrise" and Mendota means "sunset" in <insert native language>. Not sure if that's true......

When I was a kid, being "in Mendota" meant you'd gone crazy and they'd sent you to Mendota State Hospital up in Madison, a place where (in those days) one came out where maybe three went in. Only much later did I find out it was the name of a lake. So in some primal layer of my mind, "Mendota" means looney bin and always will.

Well, the indigenous Native Americans called them One, Two, Three and Four (in their language, of course).
