MIlwaukee area

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

MIlwaukee area

Postby Daisy Mae » Fri Jan 05, 2007 3:56 pm

Sigh, I am moving to the Milwaukee area. I will miss the delicious and varied restaurant scene in Madison, although I know I will be back periodically.

Any restaurant recommendations? All price ranges, all varieties welcome: dives, elegant, Italian, burger joints, whatever - am interested in anything....anything but the chains - already familiar with them. Know any cool bars, too?

Thanks.

I just moved to Milwaukee not too long ago.

My experience is mostly limited to the Bay View area, but you should check out the Palm Tavern for sure. Fine selection of Belgian beers among other things.

The Coquette Cafe is renowned for tasty food at a moderate price, but I haven't yet been so I can't vouch for it.

La Fluentes, 651 S 5th Street has some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Very inexpensive, too. Oakland Gyros on Oakland and Locust has great gyros, especially for those late night cravings. Pizza Shuttle on the east side on Farwell has the best pizza, imo. And, for German food, it's a toss up between John Ernst and Mader's (both downtown). Mader's (Mah-dur's not May-durs) has the name recognition, but John Ernst is still damn good food, though, I don't know if the latter is open anymore. Never been there, but Solly's in Glendale was featured in that burger movie, so it must be at least worth a try. Otherwise, you can't beat a Copp's Burger.

That's all I got for now.

Coquette is great. Other Third Ward places: Sauce, Palms, The Wicked Hop.

Also try: The Social, Three Brothers, Sake Tumi, Comet, EE Sane, Sil's mini-donut stand on North & Oakland.

A listing of my favorite places:

Downtown

African Hut (my #1 favorite, Laura and I are regulars)
Singha Thai
Water Street Brewery
Wicked Hop (Micro brewery)
Jewel of India
Barossa (pricey, organic, and good as hell)
Speed Queen (unbeleivable BBQ - southern style)
Cubanita's (Cuban)
El Rey Sol (moving soon to Downtown, after a decade on South Side ... best Mexican in town)
Turner Hall (German, not as expensive as Mader's or Karl Rachcze's)
Roots (another organic place that's worth the money)
Soups On! (a soup stand that is "soup nazi" good.)

East Side

Lula's (East African)
Lisa's (Pizza)
Apollo's (Greek)
Bon Appetit (Middle Eastern/Mediterranean)
Abu's (Middle Eastern)
Shahrazad (Middle Eastern)
Vetucci's (Italian)
Casablanca (Middle Eastern)
Maharaja (Indian)
Mimma's (Italian)
Izumi's (sushi that's comparable to Wasabi)
Han Kuk Kwan (Korean)
Redroom (bar with food)
Scotty's Crab House (GREAT seafood)
Beans & Barley
Pizza Man

Riverwest

West Bank Cafe (Vietnamese)
Art Bar (cool bar, good food)
Timbuktu's (pan African)

West Side

Miss Katie's Diner (classic American diner, incredible food, best milkshakes in the world, period)
Sobleman's (best burger -- better than Kopp's!)
Coerper's Five o Clock Steakhouse

South Side

Thai Lotus
Noodle House (Hmong-owned)
Rice Palace
Xel Ha (regional Mexican)
Las Botanas
La Fuente
Conejito's (ultra-cheap, ultra-good bartype Mexican)
El Rey (local grocery store chain with a great lunch counter, brush up on your Spanish before you go)

Fuck you. The best burger in Milwaukee is at Sobleman's, tucked away on an industrial strip on 19th & St. Paul. And it is not smoky.

Also, Coquette is way over-rated. It is billed as the affordable version of Sanford (same five star chef) but it ain't. At least not in my experience.

You wanna drop some serious coin and have the best steak of your life? Capital Grille on 4th & Wisconsin, Dowtown, baby. That's where the HIGH ROLLERS dine.

Sanford on Jackson is by far one of the best in the nation. Just had dinner there and if RK wants to talk about changing the culinary landscape, this is the place. Seared foie gras with a molasses glazed grilled squab.....yaya! Coquette is a great second. Listen to me I sound like I work for Sandy.

I feel for ya. Well, at least you can make a regular trip west every once in awhile to find a decent restaurant. Hey, it could be worse ... at least you'll be only an hour an a half drive away from a great restaurant scene!

Oh my GOD dude your taste is FUCKED UP. Where do I begin:

Singha Thai is the best Thai in Downtown Milwaukee right now. King and I is soooo 1990s.

Cempazuchi is OK, not the greatest, but if you are looking for true gourmet Mexican, you NEED to go to El Rey Sol, which is moving from the South Side to 1st & Pittsburgh (Downtown/Walkers Point) by the summer.

Coquette Cafe -- see my above post.

Han Kuk Kwan -- alright fine, this place is good.

Coerper's Five O'Clock Club may serve one of the best filet's in the country.
