Mpls Bridge Collapse

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Mpls Bridge Collapse

Postby charliedon'tsurf » Wed Aug 01, 2007 10:34 pm

I was trying to call a friend in Minneapolis tonight and all the phones were down. Now I know why.

Star Tribune

The photo gallery of images from the disaster are awe inspiringly horrible. Only six confirmed dead so far, but with a large span of interstate bridge collasping into the Mississippi during evening rush hour one would assume that number will rise. Anyway it sucks. I like the Twin Cities and its people.

That sucks.

Thankfully, many of the eight lanes were closed due to construction.

Unfortunately, the construction didn't happen soon enough.

Think levees in N.O. Same thing with the infrastructure in Minneapolis. That's what happens after 6.5 years of neglect.

I find this upsetting because this isn't the first bridge, or part of our infrastructure, that's overdue for maintenance. That's one thing I kept in mind, the last few years, seeing all the overpasses, between here and Chicago get replaced. Sorry if this simpleton sounds preachy, but I'd love to see the CCC back to work.

Please don't play cheap political games with this. They're still pulling people from the water.

When I heard the news my heart sunk, since I have family and friends in the Twin cities. Luckily my kid make it over the bridge just minutes before it fell.

Come off it Flanders, you got lots of nerve to be sanctamonious when it suits you. FYI they have reduced the initial death count; http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20085333/?GT1=10252

But damn straight we should be looking at whether the bridge was properly maintained. Things like this are the direct result of all the cheapskate, don't wanna pay taxes, won't invest in the public good mindset.

That's so sensitive of you. I'm impressed. I agree. It would honor the lives of so many so much more if we just stopped discussing this altogether. And, plus, every time Katrina gets mentioned, Bush's numbers go down. If only people kept their mouth shut then, too.

I sure hope this goes away - I mean, I sure hope we might unite in this tragedy and hold vigils praying that our national infrstructure holds together on its own.

You're right moose. Bush has some explaining to do about this bridge. I hope that he will take full responsibility at the press conference scheduled for 11am today. Once again we see the ineptitude of this administration! I want to know when he knew it would collapse, and who else knew. Also, if Haliburton makes one dime off of this, I'm going to go insane.

Ned: My heart goes out to the people of your beautiful city. I have family there and am very familiar with that bridge. What a tragedy! This will definitely unite the people of the Cities after all the years of bickering with the people of St Paul.

Come on Ned, admit it. When you first heard about the bridge collapsing, you thought it was Muslim terrorism.

Don't dismiss the idea so quickly. Right after it happened officials announced it wasn't terror related, and in the same breath said they had know idea why or how it happened.

Bottom line, it is not yet know if the practitioners of the religion of peace are involved.

To bad Bush didn't take your advice, he was just on the radio blaming Congress.

Bush probably knows squat about it. Not that he knows much about stuff he should be aware of, but this, obviously is not his direct bag. As far as we know some contractor saved 200 grand by only placing 3 rivets where 10 were required. Or that those 3 rivets had long since broken and the state didn't allocate repair funds - let the political points fall where they may.

At any rate, even speculating that this was anything but the hand of God is irresponsible, let alone investigating or (gasp) seeing if this isn't a statewide pattern. I wish all you accountability-mongers would just quit this. Baby Jesus cannot be investigated. Let it go.
